Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (حفظه الله): Whoever abandons good will be put to trial with evil

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan says:

Iblees – who is the imaam of the callers of misguidance – took a pledge that he will misguide the children of Aadam. He said (to Allah): “Because you have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path.”

Look! He said: “Because You (Allah) have sent me astray” – the wretched one did not acknowledge his sin, rather he ascribed it to Allah saying: ‘It was You that sent me astray.’

This is what is referred to as the methodology of the al-Jabariyyah. Iblees did not acknowledge his own mistake, but Aadam did acknowledge his by saying: “O’ our Lord, we have wronged ourselves and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us we will be from amongst the losers.”

So, both Aadam and Iblees disobeyed Allah, however Aadam acknowledged his mistake and did not ascribe it to Allah. He ascribed it to himself (to his shortcomings) and said: “O’ our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us we will be from amongst the losers.”

Whereas Iblees did not acknowledge his mistake and placed the blame on Allah instead, by saying: “You have sent me astray.”

We ask Allah for pardon.

Iblees then pledged to lead the sons of Aadam astray by coming at them “from the front, the behind, the right and the left of them,” meaning, from every single angle to prevent and obstruct them from the Straight Path, ”and you will not find most of them grateful.”

Allah granted him respite for a wisdom, to distinguish between the true believer, the hypocrite and the disbeliever. Allah has not left everyone to be the same, there must be trials and tests to be able to distinguish the people.

And a person being from the callers of misguidance – this is his punishment just how Iblees became from the callers of misguidance due to his sin.

We seek refuge in Allah from this.

When a person abandons good, he is punished with evil. Iblees left the good by refusing to prostrate before Aadam and was therefore put to trial with evil. Similarly, every person who abandons good will undoubtedly fall into evil.
