The Sahabah

...

Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do not revile the Companions of Muhammad (peace be upon him) for an hour of their sitting (he means with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him) is better than the deeds of any of you for forty years.

In another narration related by Waki`, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: (...Is better than the deeds of any of you in their whole life).

Therefore, whoever curses any of the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them all) of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will be entitled to a serious punishment according to the consensus of Muslim scholars.

However, they (Muslim scholars), disagreed on whether they should be sentenced to death or not.

Is it permissible for a woman to pierce her nose and wear a ring in it? Is it permissible to use the "Shudhar" (Duge) ? Fatwas of the Permanent Committee

Browse by Volume Number > Group 1 > Volume 24: Miscellaneous Fatwas 1 > Book on miscellaneous Fatwas > Dress and adornment > Wearing a nose ring

Q 4: Is it permissible for a woman to pierce her nose and wear a ring in it? Is it permissible to use the "Shudhar"? "Shudhar" is a substance that is to be rubbed on hands after using henna in order to make the henna color black. Is it permissible to use black dye on the hands, which is called Duge?

A: This question includes three points:

1- Putting rings in the nose. It is permissible to put rings in the nose, because piercing the nose is made for beautification purposes, not for harming or altering the creation of Allah.

2- Rubbing Shudhar on hands after using henna in order to make the henna color black. The Sunnah indicates that it is permissible for women to dye their hands with henna, and scholars stated that it is Mustahab (desirable), and that not doing it is Makruh (disliked). There is no harm in adding “Shudhar” to it.

3- Based on what is mentioned above, the ruling of using the black dye, called Duge, is permissible. However, if the Duge is impermeable, it is obligatory to remove it before Ghusl (ritual bath following major ritual impurity) taken after Janabah (major ritual impurity related to sexual discharge), menstruation and postpartum period, and before Wudu' (ablution). May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

A Great reminder regarding one's life and how he lives it ~ Mufti Aal ash-Shaykh

… Your life is a trust with you! It is a vessel for you to fill with good deeds. You are held responsible for this trust! Your life is only but days, months and years. What has gone by will not return. Every day that has passed, has indeed passed upon that which it has passed upon (from your actions), and the reward of it lies with Allah.

[…That He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done (i.e. punish them in Hell), and reward those who do good, with what is best (i.e. Paradise).]

(Surah an-Najm: 31)

O My Muslim Brother! You will be questioned  regarding your life; how you have lived it, regarding your youth; how you have passed it, regarding your wealth; how you have acquired it and how you have spent it, and regarding what you have acted upon with regards to the knowledge you acquired.

Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Fridays regularly - Fatwas of the Permanent Committee

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

The ninth question of Fatwa no.18762

Q: Some people recite Surah Al-Kahf every Friday. They say to those who do not recite it that they should recite it every Friday, because reciting it is a good act. According to them, those who recite it are better than those who do not recite it even if they recite the whole Qur’aan. And if someone does not recite it, their reward decreases even if they recite the whole Qur’an habitually.

A: Reciting Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is a Mustahabb (desirable) act, based on Hadiths related in this regard. The Prophet (peace  be upon him) said:<<Whoever recites Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have light that shines for them from that Friday until the next.>> (Related by Al-Nasa’y and Al-Hakim in his Sahih [authentic book of Hadith] through a good Isnad [chain of narration].

With regard to what is mentioned in the question that reciting Surahs (Qur’anic chapters) other than Surah Al-Kahf on Friday is insufficient, it is a baseless opinion.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions.

How Patients can perform Salah in Hospitals - Permanent Committee

Question: A questioner in a letter explained that some patients are totally ignorant of the manner in which  the sick should purify themselves and perform Salah (Prayer) when their condition does not allow them to perform it normally. The questioner requested a detailed Fatwa  on the rulings related to Taharah (ritual purification) and Salah to observed by the sick.

After considering the stated question, the Committee gave the following answer:

1. A sick person should perform Salah in a standing  posture as much as they are able to.

2. The sick person who cannot stand may pray while sitting. It is preferable to sit cross-legged in positions where one normally stands during Salah.

3. If the sick person cannot pray in a sitting position, they can pray while lying  on their side, facing the Qiblah (Ka’bah direction faced in Prayer). It is Mustahab (desirable) that they lie on their right side.

4. If the person cannot pray on their side, they can pray while lying on their back.

5. The sick person who can stand, but cannot bow or prostrate is not excused from the obligation of standing. They must pray  in a standing position and gesture (lean forward) for Ruku’ (bowing) then take a sitting position and gesture for Sujud (prostration).

6. If a person suffers for an eye disease, and a trustworthy doctors advises them that praying while lying on their back is conducive to better treatment outcomes, the sick person can pray lying on their back.

7. A sick person who cannot bow or prostrate should gesture for them, and should make the gesture for Sujud lower  than that for Ruku’.

8. A sick person who is only unable to prostrate should bow and gesture for Sujud.

9. A sick person who who is unable to bend their back should bend their neck. If a person suffers from a curved spine and so appears to be bowing, they should bend their back a little  bit more in Ruku’; while in Sujud, they should bring their face as close to the ground as possible.

10. If the sick person cannot gesture with their head, they  should make Takbir (saying: “Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]”) and start reciting and intend with their heart the actions of standing, bowing, resuming a sitting position, sitting for a while  between the two  prostrations, and sitting for Tashahhud (testification  recited in the sitting position in the second/last unit of prayer). They should recite the prescribed Adhkar (invocations and remembrance  said at certain times  on a regular basis). As for the signal made by some patients with their finger, their practice has no basis in Shari’ah (Islamic Law).

11. Whenever the sick person finds, while praying, that they are able to do what they could not do before, such as standing, sitting, bowing, prostrating or gesturing, they should perform it in the rest of Salah and do not have  to repeat the performed parts.

12. If a sick person or any other person forgets a Salah or sleeps or misses it, they must offer it when they wake up or when they remember it. They are not permitted to delay offering it until the same Salah becomes due again (on the next day).

13. The Muslim is,by all means, forbidden to abandon Salah. Rather, the Mukallaf (person meeting the conditions to be held legally accountable by their actions) must observe Salah in any condition, when healthy or sick, as it is the pillar of Islam and the greatest Faridah (obligatory act) after declaring the Two Shahadahs  (Testimonies of Faith). So the Muslim is by no means allowed to neglect Salah until its due time is over, even if they are sick as long as their mind is intact. Rather, they have to offer it in its due time according to their ability, as mentioned in detail above. It is not permissible  for a sick person  to delay the Salah until they recover their health, for such behavior has no basis in Shari’ah.

14. If the sick person finds hardship in offering each Salah at its due time, they can combine the Zhuhr (Noon) Prayer with  the ‘Asr (Afternoon) Prayer, Maghrib (Sunset) Prayer  ‘Isha  (Night) Prayer  at the time of the earlier or later one, according to their circumstances and ability. As for Fajr (Dawn) Prayer,  it may not be combined with either the Salah preceding or following it, for its time  is separate from the times  of Salahs before and after it.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

A Traveler's Salah - Fatwas of the Permanent Committee

Q: I have a problem regarding offering Salah (prayer) on foreign aircrafts while travelling to a remote areas, as the journey may last for ten hours, which makes a person unable to delay the Salah till one disembarks from the plane, for it may take off at the time of Zhuhr (Noon) Prayer and land after Maghrib (Sunset) Prayer. How should we offer  Salah in this case? Should we offer it on the plane according to ability or inability of standing, and also with respect to facing the Qiblah (direction faced for Prayer towards the Ka’bah) if we are unable to locate its direction or find one who can guide us to it.

We hope that your Eminence would elaborately clarify what we should do regarding offering the Salah on the plane in case the distance is short and long, and whether the due time extends until the plane lands or not, May Allah reward you and guide your steps.

A: If the reality is as mentioned, when the time of Salah becomes due while the plane is still flying and this Salah is one that cannot be combined with the next-in-time Salah such as Fajr (Dawn), ’Asr (Afternoon), or ‘Isha’ (Night) Prayer, and you are afraid that the time expires if you delay it until the plane lands and you become able to leave it, it is not  permissible  for you to delay the Salah until its prescribed time expires; rather, you should offer it on time on the plane before the due time expires as much as you can, either by standing, offering Ruku’(bowing) and Sujud (prostration) at your seat or by offering it in any other place on the plane. This is obligatory on you. However, if you cannot stand and it is difficult for you to do so, you may offer the Salah while sitting and make a gesture for Ruku’ and Sujud, while making the Sujud lower than Ruku’, for Allah (Exalted be He) says: <<So keep your duty to Allah and fear Him as much as you can>> Also, it is authentically reported that the  Prophet (peace be upon him) said: << Offer Salah standing if you cannot, then sitting; if you cannot, then lying on your side.”>> [Related by Al-Bukhari and Al-Nasa’i]

As for facing the Qiblah during the Faridah (obligatory Salah), you should face it in all Salahs as much as you can, such that if the plane for instance deviates away from the Qiblah during the Salah, you should turn towards it whenever it deviates, because facing the Qiblah is a condition for the validity  of Salah; but,if you are unable  to face the Qiblah, in this case, there is no blame on you, and your Salah will be valid In sha’a-Allah (If Allah wills), for Allah (Exalted be He) says: <<And to Allah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn  (yourselves or your faces) there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne.>> Moreover, you can identify the Qiblah by asking the pilot or his crew, for they have instruments which clarify this, but if you fail to identify it, you should try hard to detect it and offer your Salah in accordance with your surmise.

The same applies if the Salah can be combined with the next-in-time Salah, but you will not be able to offer it when you leave the plane at the last of the prescribed time of the next Salah, because the journey extends until  the time of the next Salah expires, in this case you should offer both the Salahs on the plane by shortening them as previously clarified. It is also  permissible for you to combine them at the due time  of any of them.

However,it is impermissible to delay both Salahs until the time of the next one expires, but if the Salah is combinative with the next one such as Maghrib and ‘Isha’, or Zhuhr and ‘Asr, and can be offered at the last time of the second one after leaving the plane, it is better to delay it until you offer it on the ground,  because in this case of the second Salah is also valid for the first; this discharges the obligation of offering the Salah according to its perfect description. Furthermore, if the journey is a  short one such that you can offer the Salah on time after arriving at your destination, it is better to delay it until the last of its prescribed time in order to offer it on ground. Yet, if you offer the Salah whose time becomes due while you are on board of the plane at the first of its  prescribed time, performing it according to ability, this will be permissible and will count as sufficient for you.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

Sufism and Sufis - Fatwas of the Permanent Committee

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Q: I ask your eminence to reply to us in short about Sufism and Sufis, their  ‘Aqidah (creed) and what is the opinion of Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah (adherents to the Sunnah and the Muslim mainstream) about them? What should Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah do regarding them and how should we treat Sufis while they insist on their ‘Aqidah? They believe that they are on the truth even after the facts are revealed before them?

I ask Allah (Exalted be He) to benefit the people who are in need to understand this matter from your knowledge. May Allah guide all of us to what pleases Him. May Allah reward you.

A: Al-Sufiyyah (Sufism) is derived from Suf (wool) because it was their costume. This is the nearest meaning in language and to reality. As for the saying that Al-Sufiyyah is derived from Al-Suffah because they look like the poor Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) who used to go to a place in Masjid Al-Nabawy (the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah) which is called Suffah, or ascribed to Safwah (purity) because of the purity of their hearts and actions; all of these sayings are not true. This is because the ascription form of Suffah is Saffyy with double f  and y. These ascription form of Safwah is Safawy and because these two meanings are not in conformity with their attributes because of their ill-thoughts, bad ‘Aqidah and frequent Bid’ah (innovation in religion).

All the Sufi sects what is called now Tasawwuf (mysticism) are full of Bid’ah and the means which leads to it and corrupted thoughts which are against the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet such as calling the dead  and Al-Aqtab by saying: Madad ya Sayyidy (Help, O my master). Madad ya Zaynab (Help, O Zaynab). Madad ya Badawy or ya Dusuqy (Help, O Badawy or Dusuqy), such actions of seeking the help of their shaykhs and Aqtab and believing that they are the spies of heart who know the unseen and what is concealed in their hearts and naming Allah  (Exalted be He) with attributes which he did not declare to Himself such as: Hwa (He) and Ah.

(Part No.2; Page No. 89)

Sufism has innovated Wird (portion of Qur’an recited with consistency) and not permissible supplications. They take the pledge from their followers to remember Allah (Exalted be He) in their rituals and acts of worship in specific names in congregation such as: Allah, Hay (alive) and Qayyum (the Self Subsisting) repeating them everyday and night and not repeating other names except with the permission of their shaykhs, otherwise he will be disobedient and has to fear the power of the servants of the names. Repeating these names must be accompanied by moving the head right and left, bowing and lifting, dancing, singing, clapping and other actions which have no basis in religion; in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him). A Muslim not sit in their sessions and must keep away from mixing with them in ordernot to be affected by their ill-thoughts, Bid’ah or polytheism. He must advise them explain the truth to them perharps Allah (Exalted be He) guides them through him and approve the actions which are in conformity with the Qur’an and Sunnah. We disapprove of the matters which are against the methodology of Ahl-ul-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah in order to be safe. Whoever wants to know the conditions of Sufism and their ‘Aqidah in details, he may read the book of Madarij Al-Salikin by Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah, and the book of “This is Sufism” by Abdul-Rahman Al-Wakil.

(Part No.2; Page No. 90)

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.

Obligation to pay Zakah is not restricted to Ramadan - Shaykh 'Abdul-Aziz 'Abdullah Al Al-Shaykh

From the Fatwas of Shaykh ‘Abdul-Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al Al-Shaykh

Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Obligation to pay Zakah is not restricted to Ramadan

Q: When does Zakah (obligatory charity) become obligatory? When should it be paid and who are its deserving recipients?

A: Zakah on wealth becomes obligatory if a Muslim possesses the Nisab (the minimum amount on which Zakah is due) and it is kept in possession for a Hawl (one lunar year calculated from the time a property reaches the minimum amount upon which Zakah is due), provided that the owner is a free person. The amount of Nisab for gold is twenty Mithqal (1 Mithqal = 4.25 grams) which is equal to approximately 92 gm. While the Nisab for silver is 200 Dirhams which is equal to 56 Saudi Riyals. If a person possesses the Nisab and kept it for a full lunar year, Zakah becomes due on it, which is one quarter of one tenth. For example, the Zakah of 100 Riyals is 2.5 Riyals and for 1000 Riyals it is 25 Riyals, and so on.

The due time for Zakah payment depends on the time when the person possesses the Nisab; if a person owns the Nisab in the month of Muharram, for example, Zakah is obligatory the following Muharram. It is worthy to mention here that the obligatory of paying Zakah is not confined to the month of Ramadan, but some Muslims prefer to pay their Zakah in Ramadan seeking  the doubled reward in this month. However, if Zakah becomes due at any other time than Ramadan, it is obligatory to pay  it and not delay it until Ramadan. If one hastens to pay Zakah in advance before the completion of a year in order to pay it in Ramadan, there is nothing wrong with this, In sha’a-Allah (if Allah wills).

As for the deserving recepients of Zakah, they are those specified in the Saying of Allah (Exalted be He): ”As-Sadaqaat (here it means  Zakaat) are only for the Fuqara (poor), and Al-Masaakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds), and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islaam), and to free the captives, and for those in debt, and for Allaah’s Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun – those fighting in a holy battle), and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allaah. And Allaah is All-Knower, All-Wise.”

Period-delaying pills to fast the whole month of Ramadan

Q: I have taken contraceptives pills in Ramadan. Should I make up for the days during which I did not have my period through the contraceptive effect of the pills and so I observed Sawn (Fasting) and offered Salah (Prayer) on them with the people? Is there any sin on me for taking these pills?

A: It is permissible for a woman to take a medicine to delay her menstrual period, so that she can perform Hajj or ‘Umrah (lesser pilgrimage), or observe Sawn in Ramadan, provided that it will result in no harmful effect on her. You do not have to make up for these days in which menstrual bleeding was stopped by the effect of the pills and you observed Sawn with the people.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

RULINGS (FATAWA)

By Shaykh Abdul-Aziz bin Baz, Shaykh Muhammad bin Uthaymeen and the Permanent Committe for Research and Ifta

Question: What is the ruling about someone who goes to Makkah without intending Hajj or Umrah?
Answer: Anyone going to Makkah without that intent, such as a salesman, office worker, postal worker, driver or others who have business there - such people are not required to assume ihram unless they wish to. This is understood from the Prophet's statement about the meeqats: "They are for those who come from them and those who come from beyond them who intend Hajj or Umrah. "So one who crosses a Meeqat not intending Hajj or Umrah does not need ihram, and that is mercy and facilitation from Allah to His servants.
Question: What should the pilgrim of tamattu’ and qiran do when he is unable to offer a sacrifice (hadi)?
Answer: When he is not able to offer the hadi he must fast three days during Hajj and seven days when he returns to his family. He has a choice concerning the three days - if he wishes he can fast them before Eed Day or if he wishes he can fast them on the three days of tashreeq. Allah has said:
"And complete the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary, must offer] a ransom of fasting or charity or sacrifice. And when you are secure, then whoever performs Umrah followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford one] - then a fast of three days during Hajj and seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Haram. And fear Allah, and know that Allah is severe in penalty." (2:196)
And in Saheeh al-Bukhari,both Aisha and Ibn Umar related:
"Fasting the days of tashreeq was not allowed except to those who could not obtain a sacrificial (hadi)."
It is preferable if one can fast the three days before the Day of Arafah, and he should not be fasting on the Day of Arafah because the Prophet stayed in Arafah without fasting and he forbade fasting on the Day of Arafah for those who are in Arafah. The three days can be fasted either consecutively or seperately and that is true of the seven at home as well. Allah did not stipulate they be fasted consecutively but only said:
وَسَبْعَةٍ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمْ ۗ
"And seven when you have returned."
For one unable to obtain a hadi, fasting is preferable to asking people to provide one for him to slaughter.
Question: Is it allowable for a woman to use pills to prevent her monthly period or delay it at the time of Hajj?
Answer: It is allowable for a woman to use pills to prevent menstruation when she fears it at that time. But it should be after the consultation of a medical specialist for the protection of her health. She may also use them in Ramadhan if she prefers to fast along with the other people.
Question: What is the ruling about someone who comes to a meeqat [for ihram] at a time other than the months of Hajj?
One who approaches a meeqat does so in one of two conditions:
1. He arrives there outside of the months of Hajj, such as in Ramadhan or Shaban. The sunnah for him is to assume ihram for Umrah, intending it in his heart and saying, "Labbayk for Umrah", and continuing to recite the talbiyah often until he reaches the Kabah. There, he ceases the talbiyah, makes a tawaf of seven circuits, prays two rakahs behind Maqam Ibrahim, performs seven trips of sai between as-safa and al-Marwah and then shaves the hair of his head or shortens it. By that he has completed his Umrah and is freed from all the restrictions of ihram.
2. He arrives at the meeqat during the months of Hajj, which are Shawwal, Dhul-Qadah and the first ten of Dhul-Hijjah. He can choose between three things: Hajj alone, Umrah alone or joining them together. When the Prophet reached the meeqat in Dhul-Qadah for the Farewell Hajj, he gave his companions a choice between these three. The sunnah for one who is not bringing with him a sacrificial animal is to enter ihram for Umrah, and do as mentioned previously for the person crossing a meeqat outside the months of Hajj, because the Prophet ordered his companions as they approached Makkah to make their ihram for Umrah, and stressed that.
Question: My mother is advanced in age and wants to perform Hajj, but there is no mahram for her in her country. To bring a mahram would cost a large sum of money, so what is the ruling in such a case?
Answer: Hajj is not an obligation for her because it is not permissible for her to travel to Hajj without a mahram whether she is young or old. If a mahram is available she should perform Hajj, but if she dies without doing so someone should make Hajj on her behalf using wealth from her estate. Otherwise, if someone volunteers to use his own wealth to perform Hajj for her it is good and righteous.
Question: When it is permissible to appoint a substitute to stone the pillars? Are there days when it is not allowed to appoint a substitute?
Answer: It is permissible to appoint a substitute for rami (stoning) of all the pillars for one who is ill or weak, for the pregnant woman who fears harm, for the nursing woman or who has no one to stay with her children, for the elderly man or woman and any others who cannot for some reason perform rami. Also, the guardian of a young child stones for him/her. The substitute stones first for himself and then for the other person at each pillar unless he has already stoned for himself that day, in which case he does not begin with himself. However, it is only permissible to appoint someone who is performing Hajj. Anyone not performing Hajj may not act as a substitute for the stoning, and if he does, it will not fulfill the duty of the person who appointed him.
Question: I sometimes read tafseers of the Qur'an while not in a pure state, as during the monthly period, for example. Am I to be blamed for that and have I earned any sin by it?
Answer: There is no problem in the menstruating or postpartum woman reading books of tafseer, or in reciting the Qur'an aloud without touching the mashaf (which contains only the words of Allah) according to the most correct view of the scholars. However, a person whose impurity is due to marital intercourse or ejaculation should not recite the Qur'an at all, excepting seperate verses, until he takes a bath (ghusl). It was confirmed about the Prophet (that he was not kept from reciting the Qur'an by anything except janabah (sexual impurity).
Question: I wore a face mask during Umrah without knowing that it is not permitted. What is the expiation for that?
Answer: Since the face mask, which is the niqab, is among the things prohibited during ihram, the woman who wears it must offer a ransom (fidyah). That means either to a slaughter a sheep or goat, feed six poor people or fast three days. But that is on the condition that she had knowledge of it and remembered, so if she wore it out of ignorance of the ruling or while having forgotten its prohibition or that she was in the state of ihram, there is no ransom. It is only for someone who does it deliberately.
