admonisher in his heart, commanding him (with good) & forbidding him (from

Delaying the Night Prayer in Ramadān Till the Last Part of the Night
Abu Dawūd As-Sijistānī (d. 275H) said,
“It was said to Ahmad while I was listening, ‘Should the Qiyām—meaning the Tarāwīh—be delayed till the last part of the night?’ He replied, ‘No. The Sunnah of the Muslims is more beloved to me.’ Ahmad would stand in prayer with the people until he had prayed the Witr with them and he would not turn away until the imām had finished. I witnessed him through the month of Ramadān, and throughout all of it, he performed the Witr along with the imām….”

The Reality of the Soul
The soul continuously calls its owner to
transgression, preference of the world, the desires and love of the delights
and pleasures. But Allaah calls His servant to fear of Him, awe of Him and
forbids the soul from its whim. He has prepared a mighty reward for the one who
follows His command.
The Exalted said: And as for
the one fears the standing in front of His Lord and restrains the soul from
impure evil desires and lusts, verily, Paradise will be his abode. [Soorah
Naazi'aat 79:40-41]
The soul in its essence calls and commands the evil.
Allaah the Exalted said: Verily the (human) self is
inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whomsoever He
wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. [Soorah Yoosuf 12:53]
The soul was originally
created ignorant and given to transgression. Knowledge, guidance and
righteousness are things that befall it due to inspiration from its Lord and
then by the struggle against it by its owner and his nurturing it and engaging
it in jihaad.
Allaah the Exalted says: And those who strive in Our way We shall guide them to our paths and verily Allaah is with the doers of good (muhsinoon). [Soorah Ankabut 29:69]

Imaam Ahmad wrote:
"The
intelligent person is the one who controls his own soul (calls it to account)
and acts (in preparation) for what comes after death...", and what is
after death? After death is the barzakh. After death there is accountability
and punishment. After death are the Scales (upon which the deeds are weighed)
and the Siraat (the bridge over Hellfire) and then it is either Paradise or
Hellfire.
So what have we prepared for what comes after
death?! "...and the incapable person is the one who makes his soul
follow its whim and has many expectations from Allaah." Such a
person is the one who says 'Allaah will forgive me, Allaah will show
mercy upon me', he covets all these things from Allaah and yet he does
not perform the righteous actions and falls into many sins and acts of
disobedience. Righteous actions are one of the means of entering Paradise.
It is not sufficient for someone to have expectations (from Allaah) without making some effort and sacrifice and striving with his soul to perform righteous actions. Allaah Azzawajall frequently links eemaan with righteous actions and it is also one of the ways of entering into Paradise.
We ask Allaah to grant us His Gardens.

Mūsā bin Talhah narrated that his
father said: I was with the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) and he passed
by some date-palm trees of Madinah, and he saw some people at the top of the
trees who were pollinating them. He said: “What are these people doing?” Talhah
(radiyallāhu ‘anhu) said: “They’re taking pollen from the male and putting it
in the female to fertilise it.”
The Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi
wasallam) said: “I do not think this will help in any way.” The news of that
reached them, so they stopped doing it and came down from the trees - and the trees did not bear any fruit that
year as a result.
When the news reached the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam), he said: “It was only a suggestion that I had. If it helps in any way, then do it. I am a human just like you, and views may be right or wrong. But if I tell you that Allah (the Mighty and Majestic ) said something, then I will never say anything untruthful about Allah.”(Reported in the Musnad of Imām Ahmad nos. 1399, 1400) See also Sahīh Muslim (no. 2361) who reported the incident and that the Prophet (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam) said: “You are more knowledgeable concerning your worldly affairs.”

utter ambiguous statements, and they begile the ignorant people by way of the
ambiguity they present to them, so we seek refuge from the fitan of the people
of misguidance!”
Concerning

Islām mentions in Minhājus
Sunnah:
“The
intent here is that they corrupt the textual evidences through that which they
attribute to them from Qarmatah (definition will follow below) and distorting
words from their places, just as they have corrupted intellectual evidences,
and reversed the nature of perceived affairs from their reality, and by
changing the Fitra that Allah has created things upon. Therefore they use general
ambiguous speech, because that is better for purposes of delusion and
misrepresentation.”

Five
Essential Qualities of a Mufti
Ibn
Battah records that Imām Ahmad – Allāh have mercy on him – said:
No
man should appoint himself to issue verdicts (fatwa) until and unless he
fulfills five characteristics:
First, he should
have a [firm and good] intention; for if he does not, he will have no light
upon him, and nor will his words.
Second, he should be forbearing, tranquil and serene.
Third, he should be strong upon what he is involved in, strong in its knowledge.
Fourth, he should
have sufficient means (wealth), otherwise the people will chew him up.
Fifth, he should
know people and their ways.

After
quoting this statement, and before his commentary on it, Ibn Al-Qayyim states:
This
is one of the proofs of the eminence of Imām Ahmad and his lofty status in
knowledge and insight; for these five are the pillars of fatwā, and to the
extent that there is deficiency in any of them, to that extent faults will
appear in the mufti.

Ishāq Ibn Rāhooyah
(d. 238) said: “Ahmad Ibn Hanbal is a proof between Allah and
His servants in this world.” And as for Qutaibah Ibn Sa’eed
Al-Baghlānee (d. 240), the Hāfidh, then his speech is extensive regarding Ahmad
(rahimahullāh). He would say: “Ahmad is the Imām of the
world.” On an occasion, he mentioned a group of the Tābi’een and mentioned Imām Ahmad along with them.
So someone asked him: “You include Ahmad in your
mention of the Tābi’een?” He responded: “Yes, amongst the greater Tābi’een!” So
not only is he mentioned in the ranks of the Tābi’een but in
the ranks of the greater Tābi’een! On another
occasion, he said: “If Ahmad Ibn Hanbal had
reached back into the era of Sufyān Ath-Thawree (d. 161H), Al-Awzā’ee (d.
157H), Mālik (d. 179H) and Layth Ibn Sa’d (d. 175), he would have given
precedence.” He also stated: “There is none who can be
mentioned alongside Ahmad.” Meaning that when you mention Ahmad
as a scholar, then mention him on his own [due to his level in knowledge and
understanding, bravery and steadfastness]. He also commented: “If it was not for Ahmad, piety would have died out for there was
none greater than Ahmad who served all of the Muslims. And it is a duty upon
every Muslim to seek forgiveness for him.”

The illustrious Imaam, Ahmad ibn
Hanbal (رحمه الله)
said,
“Beware of writing (i.e taking knowledge) from the people of desires
(innovation) – be it a little or much, upon you is (to take from) the people
of narrations and Sunnah.”

Abu Bakr b. Al-Matū’ī said:
“I visited Ahmad b. Hanbal repeatedly for 12 years while he would read the
Musnad to his sons, yet I did not write single hadīth from him. Instead,
I looked at how he guided them, and at his manners and his [fine] conduct.”
