Adhering to the Sunnah

Our Salaf (pious predecessors) on the Ten days [of Dhul-Hijjah]

Al-Bayhaqi reported from Mujâhid (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ ) that, “Once the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah began, Sa’eed bin Jubayr (radiyallâhu ‘anhu) would exert himself in obedience to Allah such that it was almost beyond his capacity.”

The Intelligent Person...

Shaykh-ul-Islām رحمه الله said:

The intelligent person is the one who continues to perform righteous action which will wipe away sins.

The Excellence of the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

 .....

The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam):

((There are no days wherein the righteous action is more beloved to Allaah than these ten days)) They said: O Messenger of Allaah, not even Jihaad in the path of Allaah? so he said: Not even Jihaad in the path of Allaah, except for a man who goes out with his person and his wealth, and then he did not return with anything from that.

Reported by Al-Bukhaaree (no.1026) and Muslim (no.1181)

Shaikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said: Appropriation of the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah with worship night and day is better than Jihaad in which ones soul and wealth are not betaken.

The Promise of Allāh is True

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allāh, He will grant you Furqān [(a criterion to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you; and Allāh is the Owner of the Great Bounty.

Purification of Heart can only be achieved through Obedience to Allaah

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim [rahimahullaah] said:

A slave is not afflicted with a punishment greater than the hardness of the heart and being distanced from Allaah. The fire of (hell) was created to soften the hardened hearts. The farthest hearts from Allaah are the hardened hearts. When the heart is hardened, the eyes become lacking in (discernment, perception, crying out of fear of Allaah etc.). The hardness of the heart occurs due to four [affairs] when their limit is exceeded: Food, sleep, speech, mixing [with the people]. And just as the diseased body is not benefited by admonitions when it is afflicted with [evil] desires. Whoever desires purification of his heart then let give him precedence to Allaah over his desires. The heart that is attached to desires is veiled from Allaah depending on the strength of its attachment to [such desires].

Fundamental Principles of Islam

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:

The religion of Islām is established upon two fundamental principles: that we worship Allāh alone without any partners, and that we [only] worship Him with what He legislated in the religion.

Righteousness is in Good Character (حـسـن الـخلق)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

Righteousness is to have good manners. And sin is that which wavers in your chest and you would dislike that the people should find out about it.

Asking the Creation for Fulfillment of Needs Has Not Been Commanded as Opposed to Asking for Knowledge

Asking the Creation for Fulfillment of Needs Has Not Been Commanded as Opposed to Asking for Knowledge

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

سؤال المخلوق المخلوق أن يقضي حاجة نفسه أو يدعو له فلم يؤمر به بخلاف سؤال العلم

A person asking another person to fulfill a need of his or to make duʾā for him, this has not been commanded (in the legislation) as opposed to asking for knowledge. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (1/185)

This and the prior statement of Ibn Taymiyyah is in relation to asking for the fulfillment of ones needs in worldly, material affairs from others. It indicates the importance of being diligent, hard-working and self-reliant after ones reliance upon Allāh, seeking His aid and assistance, displaying want only of Him and His bounty, and not displaying want and need of others in ones material needs as that is lowering oneself.

The Excellence of Remembering Allāh

152. Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying), I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favours on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.

Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, Allāh عز و جل says, I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am Able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than them, and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running.

True Happiness Is Only Found in the Qurʾān and Sunnah

True Happiness Is Only Found in the Qurʾān and Sunnah Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

Imām Ibn Al-Qayyim (d. 751 AH) said: “There are two matters that are among the reasons for true happiness: One of them is to have detailed knowledge of all the means of good and evil. One should gain insight into those [means] through observation of worldwide occurrences, and experimentation, both carried out by oneself and by others, and from what has been conveyed about past and current generations.

The most beneficial of all [these means] is to contemplate the Qurʾān. For it is, from every conceivable angle, the most sufficient and complete disposer of this need. As it expounds on and clarifies all the avenues of good and evil. Then the Sunnah, for it is like the blood sister of the Qurʾān, and the second revelation. Whomsoever can divert all their attention towards these two sources will find them adequate, removing the need to look elsewhere. For they will show you good and evil and the path towards both [clearly] as if you are able to see it before you

Abdullāh Ibn Mas’ūd (radiyallāhu ‘anhu) explained,

“There will not come upon you a day except that it is worse than the day that came before it, until the Hour is established. I do not mean in terms of affluence in one’s life or the wealth that one acquires. Rather, there will not come upon you a day except that it will be lesser in knowledge than the day that passed before it. So when the scholars have passed away and died, the people will all be at the same level – so they will not enjoin the good, nor forbid the evil, and at that point they will be ruined.

Singing is the Incantation of Fornication

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

فالغناء رقية الزنا ، وهو من أعظم الأسباب لوقوع الفواحش ، ويكون الرجل والصبي والمرأة في غاية العفة والحرية حتى يحضره ، فتنحل نفسه وتسهل عليه الفاحشة ويميل لها فاعلاً أو مفعولاً به أو كلاهما كما يحصل بين شاربي الخمر وأكثر.

“For singing is the incantation of fornication. It is from the greatest of means for the occurrence of shameful deeds. A man, child and woman are in [a state] of utmost chastity and freedom (from succumbing to desires) until they are in its presence. His soul is weakened [by it] and the shameful deed is made easy for him, he inclines to it, being either the doer or the one to whom it is done or both, similar to how it happens to the drinkers of intoxicants, or even more so.”

Why they Knowingly Reject the Truth

Shaykhul-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said:

“A person may know that the truth is with someone else but in spite of this, he obstinately rejects it due to his envy of that person or due to him seeking to make himself uppermost over him or due to personal desires. And those desires lead him to transgress against him and reject what he is saying by any means (necessary) while within his heart he knows that the truth is with him.”
