Mālik b. Dīnār said:

“Since I have known people, I have not been delighted due to their praise nor have I been saddened due to (nor have I disliked) their criticism. It was said to him, ‘Why is that?’ He replied,

‘The one who praises from among them exaggerates in his praise, and the one who criticizes is excessive in his criticism.”’
