Al- Imām Ibn Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:
The
sign of happiness is that the servant’s good deeds are behind his back and his evils [sins, disobedience] are before his eyes. And the sign of
wretchedness is that he puts his good
deeds in front of his eyes and his evils behind his back [as if he never did
them].

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymīn رحمه الله said:
…how can we prefer the fading over the everlasting?! By Allāh, that’s ignorance from us and heedlessness. How can we value this life over the next even though we see it disappear without returning – so if we do not take the opportunity to fill our lives with righteous actions, we will lose out on this life and the next.

The seven parts of
the body, which are the eyes, the ears, the mouth, the tongue, the private

Ibn al-Qayyim on the
Origin of Diseases, Calamities and Hardships
Ibn al-Qayyim (رَحِمَهُ
اللهُ) said:
“For Allāh, the Sublime, with
His wisdom (ḥikmah) and justice (ʿadl) makes the (consequences) of the
actions of the servants to appear to them
in forms (ṣūwar) that are
appropriate to (their actions). So sometimes it is in the form of a drought or
barrenness (of land). Other times it is by way of an enemy. Other times by way
of tyrannical rulers. Other times by way of general diseases. Other times it is
by anxiety, grief and worry that (settle and) reside in their souls and do not
leave them. Other times it is by preventing the blessings from the sky and the Earth from them. Other times it is by unleashing the devils upon them to
incite them to the causes of their destruction, so that His word can be
established upon them and so that each of them arrives at the outcome destined
for him. The intelligent (ʿāqil) traverses with his insight (baṣīrah) in all regions of the world and witnesses this, and he
sees the occurrence (of these instances) of Allāh’s justice and wisdom taking place.”1

“Whoever reflects over the
circumstances of the world, he will find that every goodness in the earth – its
reason is the Tawheed of Allaah and worshipping Him and obedience to His
Messenger, and that every evil in the world and tribulation and trial and drought
and empowered supremacy of an enemy and other than that – its reason is
opposing His Messenger and the call to other than Allaah and His Messenger.
Likewise, whoever reflects over this in true reflection and contemplates over
the circumstances of the world – from its inception until now; and up until
Allaah reclaims the earth and those that are upon it, he will find this affair
to be exclusively of relevance within himself as well as in the right of other
than himself – in general and in particular.”

The heart was created to acquire knowledge of its Creator and to love Him, worship Him Alone, be content with Him, to be joyous loving Him and to feel satisfied with Him. The heart was also created to rely on Allāh, to love fo His Sake, hate for His Sake, to be loyal for His Sake, to be enemies of His enemies for His Sake and to remember Him always. The heart was created to love Him more than anyone or anything else, to have Hope in Him rather than anyone or anything else and to revere Him more than anything or anyone else. There is no joy, happiness, delight or sweetness except by acquiring such qualities, which are just like food, good health and life for the heart.When the heart looses its food, health and life, then sadness, grief and affliction will attack it from all sides and will remain with it.
The
worst diseases that attack the heart are Shirk (polytheism, making partners
with Allāh), sins, and forgetfulness, ignoring what Allāh likes and is pleased
with, abandoning relating all matters to Him and not depending on Him for
everything. Diseases of the heart also include relying on other than Allāh, rejecting His decisions
and doubting and ignoring His warnings and promises.
When
one thinks about the diseases of the heart, he will find that the reasons that
we mentioned are the only ones behind these ills.

An Irrevocable Decree By Allāh
Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله mentioned:
Allāh
has decreed a decree that cannot be rejected or repelled, that
whoever loves anything asides Him will be
inevitably punished by it, and that whoever fears other than Him will be
overpowered by it, and that whoever is preoccupied with other than Him will be
befallen by misfortune, and that whoever
prefers something over Him will not be blessed in it, and that whoever
pleases other than Him by earning His anger, He (Allāh) will inevitably make
him (the one who was pleased) angry at him.

Ibn ul-Qayyim رحمه الله تعالى mentioned a statement attributed to the Salaf in origin:
A Shaytan met another Shaytaan and said to him:
“Why am I seeing you so thin & skinny?”
So he replied: “I am with a man who upon eating
always mentions the name of Allah so I am unable to eat with him. When he
drinks he mentions the name of Allah so I am unable to drink with him. When he
enters his home he mentions the name of Allah so I (am unable to enter and
instead I) have to sleep outside the house”.
So the first Shaytaan said: “I am with a man who
upon eating never mentions the name of Allah so I eat with him. When he drinks
he never mentions the name of Allah, so I drink with him. When he enters his
home he never mentions the name of Allah so I enter with him. When he has
intercourse with his wife he never mentions the name of Allah so I have
intercourse with her too alongside him”.

People’s Fear Of
Diseases
Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله said:
“The diseases of the heart, [mind and soul] are more difficult than [those] of the body
because the utmost [that] diseases of the body [can do] is lead those suffering
