Tranquility & Peace - Abbas Abu Yahya | by Following the Sunnah

By Shaykh ul- Islaam Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah as-Salafi -Rahimahullaah

From his book 'Madarij as-Salikeen'

Translated by Abbas Abu Yahya

Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘Indeed Allaah mentioned ‘as-Sakeenah’ (Tranquility) in His Book in six places:

1) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< وَقَالَ لَهُمْ نَبِيُّهُمْ إِنَّ آيَةَ مُلْكِهِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَكُمُ التَّابُوتُ فِيهِ سَكِينَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ >>

<< And their prophet said to them, Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you in which is assurance from your Lord >>[al-Baqarah: 248]

2) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< ثُمَّ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ >>

<< Then Allaah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers >>[Tawbah: 26]

3) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<<إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَيَّدَهُ بِجُنُودٍ لَمْ تَرَوْهَا >>

<< and he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed Allaah is with us.’ And Allaah sent down his tranquility upon him and supported him with Angels you did not see >>[Tawbah: 40]

4) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ فِي قُلُوبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِيمَانًا مَعَ إِيمَانِهِمْ وَلِلَّهِ جُنُودُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا >>

<< It is He who sent down tranquility into the hearts of the believers that they would increase in faith along with their [present] faith. And to Allaah belong the soldiers of the heavens and the earth, and ever is Allaah Knowing and Wise. >>[al-Fath: 4]

5) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< لَقَدْ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْ يُبَايِعُونَكَ تَحْتَ الشَّجَرَةِ فَعَلِمَ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ فَأَنْزَلَ السَّكِينَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ وَأَثَابَهُمْ فَتْحًا قَرِيبًا >>

<< Certainly was Allaah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquility upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest >>[al-Fath: 18]

6) The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< إِذْ جَعَلَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الْحَمِيَّةَ حَمِيَّةَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ وَعَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ >>

<< When those who disbelieved had put into their hearts chauvinism - the chauvinism of the time of ignorance. But Allaah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers >>[al-Fath: 26]

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- used to read the Ayaat of as-Sakeenah (Tranquility) if matters became intense for him.

And I heard him talk about a great incident which occurred when he was sick, the general intellect is too deficient to comprehend how evil souls emerged and waged war against him in his state of weakness.

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said :

When this matter became intense, I said to my relatives and those around me:

‘Read the Ayaat of as-Sakeenah (Tranquility). Then I would be free from this condition, and I would sit up as if a transformation had taken place and there was nothing wrong with me.’

Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

I also tried this, and I read these Ayaat of as-Sakeenah (Tranquility) when the heart becomes agitated due to what affects it and I witnessed the amazing effects of these Ayaat on the tranquility of the heart and its peacefulness.’

The People of Al-A’râf

When Abdullah bin Abbas رضى الله عنهما  was asked about the people of Al-Arâf, he said:

Al-Arâf is a mount between Paradise and the Fire. It was called Al-Arâf because it overlooks Paradise and the Fire, and it has trees, fruits, rivers and springs. Those who will be kept at Al- Arâf include some men who joined the Jihâd without permission from their fathers and mothers and were martyred in Jihâd. Their death in the Cause of Allâh qualified them to be save from the Fire, but their disobedience to their parents prevented them from entering Paradise. They will remain at Al-Arâf until Allâh decides in their case.1

Picking Up Objects During Prayer

Question: O Eminent Shaykh, a man praying Salaatul-Dhuhr drops his handkerchief while he is standing so he bends down and grabs the handkerchief, is his prayer invalidated by this movement?

Answer: Yes, his prayer is invalidated by this movement; because when he makes Rukoo he bends down until he reaches the point of the Rukoo, but he has (now) increased the Rukoo (i.e. gone past the Rukoo point to grab his handkerchief or added another Rukoo). However, if he has done so out of ignorance then there is nothing upon him due to the generality of His, Exalted be He, statement: Our Lord, punish us not if we forget or fall into error. [Sooratul-Baqarah 2: 286] Due to this, if you drop a handkerchief or key while you are standing in prayer then leave it until you reach it in sujood or pick it up with your foot. If you are able to stand on one foot, then get it with your foot then grab it (from your foot) with your hand. As for the person bending down to grab it from the ground wherein the rukoo would be closer to it than the qiyaam, then this is not permissible.

The ruling on removing gold teeth from the deceased

Question:

If a person dies and he has gold teeth, should they be removed from him if he owes a debt - even though removing them may not be performed with ease - or should they be left if he does not owe a debt?

Answer:

If a person dies and he has gold or silver teeth, and removing them may not be done with ease, there is no harm in leaving them. It makes no difference if the person owes a debt or not. It is possible that he may be dug up after some time and the teeth may be taken for his heirs or (to pay) a debt. However, it if is easy to remove them, it is obligatory to do so, because they are wealth that should not be wasted if one has the ability (to save them).

He was unsure whether his clothes had been polluted by something while he was praying

Question:

If the imam is unsure whether his clothes have become polluted, and he does not leave the prayer, since it is only a doubt, then when he finishes praying, he finds some filth on his garment, what is the ruling? And should he leave the prayer in this situation, due to only a doubt, or should he wait until he has prayed?

Answer:

If the worshipper is in doubt as to the presence of some pollutant on his garment while praying, it is not permissible for him to abandon the prayer, whether he is the imam or a worshipper being led by the imam, or he is praying alone. He must complete his prayer, and if he finds after that, that there is some pollutant on his garment, there is no obligation on him to make up for it, according to the most authoritative opinion, because he was not aware of its presence until after the prayer.

It has been reported authentically from the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) that he removed his shoes during the prayer when Jibril informed him that there was some filth on them, and he did not repeat the first part of the prayer, instead, he continued to pray. And Allah is the giver of success.

Talaq for false reason

[Fatwa no. 263]

Q: A man received some false letters against his wife, which he believed to be true and gave his wife Talaq (divorce pronounced by a husband) accordingly. Later, he learned that they were fabricated and asks whether his Talaq is effective or not?

A: If the reality is as mentioned that the husband divorced his wife only because of these letters which he thought to be true, but were then found to be false, his Talaq does not count.

This Talaq falls under the conditional divorce which becomes effective when a certain condition occurs and in this case, the condition has not occurred.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet, his family, and Companions!

What is the Ruling on Wearing a Steel Watch or Ring?

Question:

Does wearing a watch made from steel fall under the general prohibition against wearing steel? And is it permissible to wear a watch on one's right hand?

Answer:

There is no fault in wearing a watch on the left or right hand, just as is the case with the ring. It is confirmed that the Prophet (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) would sometimes wear his ring on his left hand and sometimes on his right one. And it is permissible to wear a ring or watch made from steel. The Prophet (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) established this when he said to the suitor (who needed to give a dowry),

Look about you, even if it is a steel ring (that you find). (Al-Bukhari no. 5135 and Muslim no. 1425)

The narration that indicates a prohibition is peculiar, as it is contrary to this authentic Hadeeth.

Killing insects in ones home

Question:

May we kill insects in our homes, insects such as ants and cockroaches, using fire, and if not, what should we do?

Answer:

If these insects are harmful, you should not kill them using fire, but using insecticides. The Messenger of Allaah said, There are five animals that are all Fawasiq and should be killed while not in Ihram and while in Ihram: the crow, the kite (a kind of bird), the scorpion, the mouse, and the ferocious dog. [1] In another narration, the Messenger of Allaah mentioned six, the sixth one being the snake. The same ruling applies to other harmful animals, such as cockroaches and ants: you may kill them, but don't kill them using fire; rather you should use insecticides. And with Allaah is the facilitation to do what is right.

Should a suitor be informed of the woman's medical history?

Q: If a girl undergoes an abdominal surgery, for example, after birth or a few months later; should her family inform her suitor of this surgery which left a scar up till now? Does he have a Shar`y (Islamic legal) right to know something like this or not?

A: All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who follow his guidance until the Day of Resurrection. To proceed:

Muslims should be truthful in all matters, as trustfulness leads to every good and saves from all evil. If a suitor proposes to a young woman who has scars due to surgical procedures, her family should inform him, as some people may not accept or tolerate such marks. Furthermore, this may lead to serious problems between them and he may accuse her of having defects. The family of the bride should inform the suitor about her case to be clear from the beginning and not to expose themselves to blame later on.
