The Outward and Inward
Favours
Allāh, the Most High said:
وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعَمَهُ ظَاهِرَةً وَبَاطِنَةً
And He showered you with His favours, both
outward and inward. (31:20)
Imām
al-Baghawī said:
(Outward and inward),
Ikrimah related from Ibn ‘Abbās, “The outward favour
is Islām and the Qur’ān. The inward is whatever Allāh has concealed of your
sins and has not hastened punishment (for them).” Al-Ḍaḥḥak said, “Outward (means)
your good form, with good proportionality in all your limbs and inward means
knowledge.” Muqātil said, “Outward (means) a balanced form in creation, sustenance
and Islām. And inward means that Allāh has covered of (your) sins.” Al-Rabī
said,”Outward means (favours) by way of the limbs and inward means (favours) by
way of the heart.” It has also been said that outward means affirmation of the
tongue and inward means belief with the heart. And it has been said, outward
means complete sustenance and inward means good manners. And ‘Aṭā
said,”Outward means lightening of the legislated duties and inward means
intercession.”
