“What has been Related Concerning the Prophet’s Haircare.” - The Fitnah of Selfie-Amazement

al-Tirmidhī pens the chapter: “What has been Related Concerning the Prophet’s Haircare.” In it he collects the narration of ‘Abd Allāh b. Mughaffal (رَضِيَ اللهُ عنهُ) who said:

«نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ التَّرَجُّلِ إِلَّا غِبًّا»

“Allah’s Messenger  prohibited the combing of the hair, unless it is done occasionally.”³

Regarding the interpretation of this narration, al-Manāwī (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) states: “What is intended in  the prohibition is constant attention and focus upon it, because this is excessiveness in beautification.”⁴

We find in the narration collected by Imām Muslim (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ):

بَيْنَمَا رَجُلٌ يَتَبَخْتَرُ ، يَمْشِي فِي بُرْدَيْهِ قَدْ أَعْجَبَتْهُ نَفْسُهُ، فَخَسَفَ اللهُ بِهِ الْأَرْضَ، فَهُوَ يَتَجَلْجَلُ فِيهَا إِلَى يَوْمِ القِيَامَةِ

“While a man was strutting haughtily in his garments, amazed with himself, Allāh caused the  earth to swallow him up, and he will continue to sink into the earth until the Day of  Resurrection.”¹

Another wording mentions  that the man was preoccupied with combing his hair. Al-Qurṭubi (رَحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ) said: “This self-indulgence is when a person  looks at himself with amazement, forgetting the blessing of Allāh.”²

Tremendous Reminder: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ informed us concerning the man who has two wives and inclines towards one over the other:

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, “Whoever has two wives and he inclines towards one of them over the other, he will come on the Day of Judgement, and he will be lopsided.”

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān said, “This narration is a proof of the recompense and the punishment for anyone who will lean and incline towards one of his wives, over the other.”

The noble scholar, al-Shaykh ʿAbd Allāh al-Qarʿāwī(رَحِمَهُ اللهُ)  wrote in a letter to his Shaykh Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) : “I write informing you that when coming this time, I purchased ten-thousand copies of Thalāthah al-Usūl, and like it maṣāḥif, Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, and other than that from the [books of] Ḥadīth and tajwīd; ten-thousand copies of each, costing more than twenty thousand riyals.”*

Seperating a Mother from Her  Child

Ibn al-Qayyim (ُرَحِمَه الله) states: “Indeed, he, i.e. the legislator, ruled that the mother has more right to the child than the father; and to live in close proximity with the ability to meet at all times, if the father is given custody. He legislated that the mother  should not have to yearn for her young one and informed that whoever seperates a mother from her child, Allāh will separate him from his loved ones on the Day of Resurrection. He also prohibited selling a mother (female slave) without her child or a child without his mother, even if they are in the same land. So how is it permissible with this resolution to separate her from her child, a separation making it difficult to see and meet with him, and difficult to have patience with [the child’s] absence?”

The Five Faces of the Hizbī

قال شيخنا مقبل بن هادي الوادعي:

فالحزبي مستعد أن يكون له خمسة أوجه، والنبي ﷺ يقول: إن من شر النّاس ذا الوجهين الذي يأتي هؤلاء بوجه و هؤلاء بوجه.

Our Shaykh, al-Muhaddith, Muqbil b. Hādī al-Wādi’ī (رحمه الله) stated, “The hizbī (bigoted partisan) is prepared to show five faces, and the Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Indeed, the worst of the people is the two-faced person, showing one face to some and another face to others.’”¹

Ibn Qayyim on Lowering the Gaze

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) stated:

“There are numerous benefits in lowering the gaze: one is saving the heart from the pain of grief and sorrow. For indeed the one who looks to and fro, his sorrow persists. Thus, the most harmful thing upon the heart is a roving eye. For it shows one that which increases and intensifies his desire, and he cannot abstain from it, unable to obtain it; and that is the utmost of his pain and agony.”

Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) stated: “One only finds difficulty in quitting habits when  he leaves them for other than Allāh. As for the one who quits them truthfully and sincerely from his heart for Allāh then he only finds difficulty in quitting at the very beginning, to ascertain whether he is truthful or lying about stopping. So if he is patient with that hardship for a little while, it will turn into delight”

Love of Fame & Praise

قال الذهبي: "ينبغي للعالم أن يتكلم بنية و حسن قصد، فإن أعجبه كلامه فليصمت، فإن أعجبه الصمت فلينطق، ولا يفتر عن محاسبة نفسه، فإنها تحب الظهور والثناء.

Al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) stated:

“The person of knowledge should speak with a good and sincere intent. If his speech amazes him, he should remain quiet. If remaining quiet amazes him, he should speak, and he should never cease examining his soul, for indeed it loves fame and praise.”*

Harshness Against the Innovators

The Harshness of al-Imām Aḥmad b.’Awn Allāh Against the People of Innovation

Translated by Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik Ādam al- Akhḍar

IN THE BIOGRAPHY  of al-Imām Aḥmad ibn ‘Awn Allāh (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ), Al-Ḥāfiz ibn ‘Asākir (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) writes: Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad said: “Abū Ja’far Aḥmad ibn ‘Awn Allāh denounced the people of innovation and and was harsh with them. He used to humiliate them, seeking out their faults. He was quick to bring harm to them and was coarse with them. He would frighten them off if he was able to do so and was never garrulous with them. Each and every one of them feared for himself because of him. He never flattered them whatsoever, nor did he compromise with them.

If he discovered a reprehensible act from one of them or witnessed [the person’s] deviation from the Sunnah, he would expose him, declare his innocence from him, and revile him in gatherings. He would instigate [the innovator] until he either ruined him or until [the innovator] left off his evil way and corrupt creed. He was tireless upon this, exerting himself in this seeking the Face of Allāh until Allāh called him back.”*
