Ibn al-Qayyim on the Origin of Diseases, Calamities and Hardships

Ibn al-Qayyim on the Origin of Diseases, Calamities and Hardships

Ibn al-Qayyim (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) said:

“For Allāh, the Sublime, with His wisdom (ikmah) and justice (ʿadl) makes the (consequences) of the actions of the servants to appear to them  in forms (ūwar) that are appropriate to (their actions). So sometimes it is in the form of a drought or barrenness (of land). Other times it is by way of an enemy. Other times by way of tyrannical rulers. Other times by way of general diseases. Other times it is by anxiety, grief and worry that (settle and) reside in their souls and do not leave them. Other times it is by preventing the blessings from the sky  and the Earth from them. Other times  it is by unleashing the devils upon them to incite them to the causes of their destruction, so that His word can be established upon them and so that each of them arrives at the outcome destined for him. The intelligent (ʿāqil) traverses with his insight (baīrah) in all regions of the world and witnesses this, and he sees the occurrence (of these instances) of Allāh’s justice and wisdom taking place.”1

Who is the Mujaahid?

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) said:

Belief in the Unseen

Six Mighty Wisdoms Behind Why We Do Not Hear the Dead in Their Graves

Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) said, in his explanation of Al-Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah 2/118-119:

And this is for (numerous) mighty wisdoms, from them:

[1] What is indicated by the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) in his saying, “Were it not that you would not have buried (your dead) I would have invoked Allaah to let you hear (the cries) of the punishment of the grave.”

[2] Concealing it is a veil (covering) for the deceased.

[3] That it does not cause the deceased’s family to be disturbed.

[4] Not embarrassing (shaming) of his family, since the people will say “This is your son”, “This is your father”,This is your brother” and what is like this.

[5] That we may perish (as a result) because it is not a light type of screaming, it is a screaming that will cause our hearts to be plucked out , a person will die or may fall unconscious (out of fear, terror).

[6] If the people heard the cries of the deceased being punished, then faith in the punishment of the grave would be reduced to faith through direct observation and not faith in the unseen, and therefore the purposeful benefit of testing people would be lost, because the people would obviously believe in what they witness. However, when it is hidden from them and they do not know of it except through relayed information (khabar), then it becomes from faith in the unseen.

May Allaah reward the brother who sent me this benefit!

Hidden Charity Extinguishes the Anger of the Lord

From Abu amzah al-Thumāli who said:

‘Alī bin al-usayn[1] used to carry bags of bread over his back during the night and would give it in charity. And he would say: Verily, hidden charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord, the Mighty and Majestic.[2]

This statement  about hidden charity is raised  (مرفوع) to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم which Shaykh al-Albānī authenticated on account of all of its routes of transmission, see text below. [3]

The Light of Intellect Recognises the True Favour of Allāh

 Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:

He who does not see the favour of Allāh upon him except in his food, drink and well-being of his body, then he has no share of intellect at all. For the favour of Allāh with Islām and Īmān, drawing His servant to turn towards Him, and finding pleasure in His obedience, this is the greatest of favours, and this is grasped through the light of intellect and [receiving] the guidance of success.

Asking the Creation for Fulfillment of Needs Has Not Been Commanded as Opposed to Asking for Knowledge

Asking the Creation for Fulfillment of Needs Has Not Been Commanded as Opposed to Asking for Knowledge

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

سؤال المخلوق المخلوق أن يقضي حاجة نفسه أو يدعو له فلم يؤمر به بخلاف سؤال العلم

A person asking another person to fulfill a need of his or to make duʾā for him, this has not been commanded (in the legislation) as opposed to asking for knowledge. Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā (1/185)

This and the prior statement of Ibn Taymiyyah is in relation to asking for the fulfillment of ones needs in worldly, material affairs from others. It indicates the importance of being diligent, hard-working and self-reliant after ones reliance upon Allāh, seeking His aid and assistance, displaying want only of Him and His bounty, and not displaying want and need of others in ones material needs as that is lowering oneself.

Singing is the Incantation of Fornication

Singing is the Incantation of Fornication

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

فالغناء رقية الزنا ، وهو من أعظم الأسباب لوقوع الفواحش ، ويكون الرجل والصبي والمرأة في غاية العفة والحرية حتى يحضره ، فتنحل نفسه وتسهل عليه الفاحشة ويميل لها فاعلاً أو مفعولاً به أو كلاهما كما يحصل بين شاربي الخمر وأكثر.

“For singing is the incantation of fornication. It is from the greatest of means for the occurrence of shameful deeds. A man, child and woman are in [a state] of utmost chastity and freedom (from succumbing to desires) until they are in its presence. His soul is weakened [by it] and the shameful deed is made easy for him, he inclines to it, being either the doer or the one to whom it is done or both, similar to how it happens to the drinkers of intoxicants, or even more so.”

Shaykh Rabee bin Hadee on the Importance of Sidq (Truthfulness) in Religious and Worldly Affairs.

Rectification of the Worldly Affairs and Establishment of the Deen is Founded upon Truthfulness

Shaykh Rabee bin Hadee: For verily the quality of sidq (truthfulness) is from the greatest of rectifiers of (both) the deen and dunyaa. The dunyaa is not rectified and the deen is not established upon lying, deception and dishonesty.

The Variation [in Excellence] Among Men is Greater than the Variation Between the Angels

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

إذا كان الواحد منهم [ بنو آدم ] أفضل من الملائكة ، والواحد منهم شر من البهائم ؛ كان التفاضل الذي فيهم أعظم من تفاضل الملائكة ، وأصل تفاضلهم إنما هو بمعرفة الله ومحبته

When one among them [from Banī Ādam] can be superior [in excellence] than the Angels and one among them can be more evil [lowly] than the animals, then the variation [in excellence] that is between them is greater than the variation [in excellence] between the Angels. And the foundation of this variation [in excellence] is knowledge of Allāh and love of Him.

The Pillars of Gratitude

The Pillars of Gratitude

Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī (حفظه الله) said:

The pillars of gratitude—those which if a person combines together he becomes truly grateful to Allāh—are three:

 a) Affirmation of the favour inwardly, with certainty that it is from Allāh, that if He wills, He can remove it or make it remain.

b) Informing about the favour openly, when there is a need to do that.

c) Making use of this favour in what pleases the one who bestowed it, which is Allāh.

The Prayer Contains Two Mighty Benefits One of Which is Greater Than the Other

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said, as related by Ibn al-Qayyim:

في الصلاة فائدتان عظيمتان ؛ إحداهما : نهيها عن

وتضمنها له ولَمَا تضمنته من ذكر الله أعظم من نهيها

 عن الفحشاء والمنكر

In the prayer are two mighty benefits. The first of them is its prevention of shameful and evil deeds. And the second is what it contains and comprises of remembrance. And what it comprises of Allāhs remembrance is greater than its prevention of shameful and evil deeds.

How Do You Attain Certainty (Yaqīn)

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

The means of preserving health and intellect - Imam Al-Shāfiʿī

Al-Shāfiʿī (رحمه الله) said:

The Soul and its Purification: I Want to Fight My Soul So What Is The Way?

 ....

The Reality of the Soul

The soul continuously calls its owner to transgression, preference of the world, the desires and love of the delights and pleasures. But Allaah calls His servant to fear of Him, awe of Him and forbids the soul from its whim. He has prepared a mighty reward for the one who follows His command.

The Exalted said: And as for the one fears the standing in front of His Lord and restrains the soul from impure evil desires and lusts, verily, Paradise will be his abode. [Soorah Naazi'aat 79:40-41]

The soul in its essence calls and commands the evil.

Allaah the Exalted said: Verily the (human) self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His Mercy (upon whomsoever He wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. [Soorah Yoosuf 12:53]

The soul was originally created ignorant and given to transgression. Knowledge, guidance and righteousness are things that befall it due to inspiration from its Lord and then by the struggle against it by its owner and his nurturing it and engaging it in jihaad.

Allaah the Exalted says: And those who strive in Our way We shall guide them to our paths and verily Allaah is with the doers of good (muhsinoon). [Soorah Ankabut 29:69]

....

The First Way: Holding the Soul to Account...

Imaam Ahmad wrote:

"The intelligent person is the one who controls his own soul (calls it to account) and acts (in preparation) for what comes after death...", and what is after death? After death is the barzakh. After death there is accountability and punishment. After death are the Scales (upon which the deeds are weighed) and the Siraat (the bridge over Hellfire) and then it is either Paradise or Hellfire.

So what have we prepared for what comes after death?! "...and the incapable person is the one who makes his soul follow its whim and has many expectations from Allaah." Such a person is the one who says 'Allaah will forgive me, Allaah will show mercy upon me', he covets all these things from Allaah and yet he does not perform the righteous actions and falls into many sins and acts of disobedience. Righteous actions are one of the means of entering Paradise.

It is not sufficient for someone to have expectations (from Allaah) without making some effort and sacrifice and striving with his soul to perform righteous actions. Allaah Azzawajall frequently links eemaan with righteous actions and it is also one of the ways of entering into Paradise.

We ask Allaah to grant us His Gardens.

The Distinguishing Signs of Ahl al-Bid’ah – (The People of Innovation)

The Distinguishing Signs of Ahl al-Bidah – (The People of Innovation)1

Translated by Abu ʿIyaa

Jumādā al-Ākhirah 1417 AH / November 1996 CE

Abū ʿUthmān al-Sābūnī (d. 449H) (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) said:

And the characteristics [resulting] from [the effects of] innovations  upon their people are obvious and manifestly clear. The most apparent of their signs and characteristics is the severity of their enmity and hatred towards the carriers of the narrations of the Prophet (صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ), their disdain of them, their scorn of them [considering them to be valueless] and naming them with ashawiyyah (Worthless People), Jahalah (the Ignorant), āhiriyyah (Literalists), and the Mushabbihah (those who liken  Allāh to the creation). [And this], due to their belief [concerning] the  narrations of the Prophet (صَلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ),  that they are devoid of any knowledge and that the [real] knowledge is that which Shayān throws at them  from the results of their corrupt intellects, the dark whisperings of their chests [i.e. souls], the false notions  of their  hearts [which are] empty of any goodness, their words and proofs which are devoid of truth and their unjustified and futile doubts.
