The signs of happiness and wretchedness...

Al- Imām Ibn Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:

The sign of happiness is that the servant’s good deeds are behind  his back and his evils [sins, disobedience]  are before his eyes. And the sign of wretchedness is  that he puts his good deeds in front of his eyes and his evils behind his back [as if he never did them].

Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Verily, this hardens the heart...

Shaykh Al-Fawzān حفظه الله said:

The more the tongue utters speech void of the remembrance of Allāh, then the harder the heart becomes. Many people waste their time  with gossip, with speech that contain no benefit, and with laughter, play and heedlessness. Verily, this hardens the heart.

The Meaning of Ibādah and Islām

The Meaning  of Ibādah and Islām

Ibn Kathīr (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) said:

Ibādah is obedience to Allāh  by acting upon what He commands, abandoning what He forbids, and this is the reality and essence of Islām. And the meaning of Islām is: Istislām (submission and surrender) to Allāh (سُبحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) along with the utmost compliance, humility, and submissiveness to Him.”

Why We Fear and Hope in Allāh

Imām ʿAbd al-Ramān ibn Nāir al-Saʿdī  رَحِمَهُ اللهُ:

The true believer must allow  fear and hope to  consistently accompany him in all his affairs. This is because he possesses two outlooks.  When he looks  inwardly, he sees his own deficiency in the fulfilment of Allāhs rights. This instils fear. Then, his second outlook is towards the blessings of Allāh upon him,  and the goodness He has shown. This instils hope within him.

The Amazing Effect of Charity in Repelling Calamity

Ibnul-Qayyim said:

Sadaqah has an amazing effect in repelling various types of calamities, even if it may be given by a sinner  or wrongdoer; rather, (even if from) a disbeliever, Allah, the Exalted, will remove  from him various types of calamity due to it. This is an affair which is known by the people, the erudite and the commoners, and all of the people of the earth can affirm this because they have experienced it.

How Do You Attain Certainty (Yaqīn)

How Do You Attain Certainty (Yaqīn)

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

وأما كيف يحصل اليقين فبثلاثة أشياء : أحدها : تدبر القرآن .والثاني : تدبر الآيات التي يحدثها الله في الأنفس والآيات التي تبين أنه حق .الثالث : العمل بموجب العلم.

“As for how certainty is acquired, then it is through three things: The first of them is contemplation over the Qurʾān. The second is contemplation over the signs Allāh places in the souls and the signs that make clear that it (the Qurʾān) is the truth. The third is acting upon the requirement of knowledge.”

Rectify What Is Between You And Allāh.

Rectify What Is Between You And Allāh.

Scholars used to offer admonitions and write to one another regarding three things: Whoever rectifies himself internally, Allāh will make him upright externally as well. And whoever rectifies whatever is between himself and Allāh, then Allāh will rectify whatever is between him and the people. And whoever rectifies the matter of his hereafter, then Allāh will rectify his worldly life.

Be Cautious and Concern About your Nafs

----

Imaam Abu Bakr Muhammad Ibn Al-Husayn Al-Aajurree [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Allaah said:

But when there comes the greatest catastrophe (i.e. the Day of Recompense, etc.), the Day when man shall remember what he strove for, and Hell-fire shall be made apparent in full view for (every) one who sees, then, for him who Tagha (transgressed all bounds, in disbelief, oppression and evil deeds of disobedience to Allah). And preferred the life of this world (by following his evil desires and lusts), verily, his abode will be Hell-fire; but as for him who feared standing before his Lord, and restrained himself from impure evil desires, and lusts, then verily, Paradise will be his abode. [Surah  An-Naazi’aat. Aayaat 34-41]

It is obligated  on the one who hears this from Allaah [i.e. the affairs stated about the nafs in the Qur’an and Sunnah] that he is more careful or cautious about his nafs than an enemy  that wants to kill him , or take his wealth, or violate his honour. If someone says: “Why do you obligate – on me – this precaution about the Nafs until you place it in a situation that is more severe than an enemy whose enmity is certainly very manifest? It should then be said to him, “The enemy of yours who wants to kill you, or wants to take your wealth or violate your honour, if he overcomes you with what he does to you, then indeed Allaah will expiate some of your sins and raise your status, but this will not be the case with the nafs because if the nafs overcomes you by way of that which you desire – that which you have forbidden, then this contains destruction for you in this Dunya and the Aakhirah – disgrace and severe punishment in the Dunyah, and an evil state in the sight of Allaah and destination in the Aakhirah...

Allah, the Most High, said: “And they were not commanded except that they should worship Allah alone, to be sincere to Him in Religion, upright and steadfast―and to perform the Prayers and pay the Zakāt, and that is the true religion.” (Al-Bayyinah: 5)

---

It was said to Abu ‘Ali Al-Fudayl bin ‘Iyād (d. 187H):

O Abu Ali, what is the meaning of best in deeds? He replied: To make it sincere and correct. He was asked: What is meant by making it sincere and correct? He replied: If a deed is done sincerely but not correctly, it will not be accepted. And if it is done correctly but not sincerely, it will not be accepted - until it is done both sincerely and correctly. It was said: O Abu Ali, what is sincerity and what is correct? He replied: Sincerity is that the deeds is done purely for Allah and correct is that it is done according to the Sunnah.

Al-Imām Ibn Bāz (rahimahullāh) commented on these words of Fudayl binIyād (rahimahullāh) said:

فالاهتمام بإحسان العمل أعظم وأوْلى من الكثرة، فكون المؤمن يهتم بإخلاص العمل وتنقيته من الرياء وغيره من أنواع الشرك، ويهتم بمُطابقته للشريعة، وألا يكون فيه ابتداعٌ؛ هذا أهم من الكثرة

Making the deed correct (according to the Sunnah) is more important than quantity - and the servant must give importance to performing the deed sincerely for Allah and purifying it from riyā (i.e. showing off to impress the people) and other than that from the categories of Shirk. So a person is to give importance to making sure the deed complies with the Sharīah and that is free from innovation - that is more important that quantity.
