“If these lines (of poetry) were written in gold, the gold would be irrelevant”

Ibn al Qayyim mentions in his Nūniyyah about those who prefer the dunyā over the herafter:

هربوا من الرّق الّذي خلقوا له ** فبلوا برقّ النفس و الشيطان

They fled from the servitude which they were created for, so in turn they became enslaved to their desires and the devil.

Shaykh Uthaymīn rahimahullāh said:

“What is the servitude for which we were created? The answer is servitude to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; that we devote all servitude to Him, and we ask Allah to make us those who are servants to Him.

‘So in turn they became enslaved to their desires and the devil.’ (Meaning) they became slaves to their own whims and to the devil. Will you exchange what is less  for what is better? They fled from the servitude which in reality is (true) freedom, and that is the servitude and worship of Allah; and ran to the servitude of the devil which is humiliation and loss in this world and in the next.

If these lines (of poetry) were written in gold, the gold would be irrelevant.”
