If one of them or both of them attain old age in
your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address
them in terms of honor. (Soorah Al-Isrā’ 17:23)
At this age your parents are in
the most need of you being sociable and friendly with them and listening to
them. Enjoy sitting with them and don’t become bored with their speech. Don’t
say: “This is the same old story. I’ve heard this story tens of times before!”
Rather; listen to them as though you are hearing this story for the first time.
They used to listen to you when
you were young and your speech was indecipherable. And that made them happy.
And you were not even saying anything. Thus it is from kindness to them that
you listen to them, enjoy their speech and openly display your happiness. Do
this before you lose them; either by your departure or theirs. Be sociable and
friendly with your fathers be sociable and friendly with your mothers. Sit with
them, take them by the hand, listen to them; be kind to them. This is an
obligation upon us. This is from their rights. This matter is not just
something preferred.
