Al-'Allâmah Muhammad bin Sālih al-Uthaymīn (may Allah have mercy upon him) said concerning the disease of the heart and the disease of the body:
...and the 1st (referring to disease of the heart) takes precedence in being paid attention to and taken care of, because upon it lies everlasting destruction or remaining (destroyed) forever. The sickness of the heart has 2 branches.
The first branch is ignorance, for verily many of the people love good and strive for it but they are ignorant (of that good). They fall into a great mistake(due to that ignorance) and for that reason Sufyaan ibn Uyaynah may Allah have mercy upon him said, "whoever is corrupt from our worshippers then he has in him a resemblance of the Christians", because the Christians want good, but they are misguided away from it, as Allaah the Mighty and Majestic has said:
"But the monasticism that they invented for themselves, We did not prescribe for them but (they sought it) only to please Allah therewith" [Al-Hadeed 57:27]
and Sufyaan said "if one our scholars becomes corrupt then he has in him a resemblance of the Jews" that is because the Jews know the Truth but they oppose the truth. Upon these revolve the sickness of the heart (ignorance and opposing the truth). So therefore we know that we must have knowledge and we must submit and accept the Legislation. If not, then destruction will come about!! This destruction is not like the physical body being harmed. The body being destroyed will return back to its original form:
"Thereof (the earth) We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you out once again." [Ta-Ha 20:55]
But destruction of the hearts means loss of life! loss of life! because a person did not benefit from his existence in this world, he lost out in this world, and he will not benefit in the Hereafter! So what is the true life? Question? (What is the real life?) Answer? The life of the Hereafter due to the statement of Allaah the Blessed and the Most High:
"And verily the life of the hereafter is indeed the true life (al-hayawaan)." [Al-'Ankaboot 29:64]
The people of knowledge say it (al-hayawaan) is a complete and perfect life and Allaah the Mighty and the Majestic said:
"On that Day man will remember but how will that remembrance avail him? He will say: "Alas! Would that I have sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" [Al-Fajr 89: 23-24]
