Shaykh Salih ibn al-Fawzan (حَفِظَهُ اللهُ)
says:
“In this day and time, when Ramadan
approaches, the army of Shaytan present captivating programs that turn the
people away from this Month. They prepare contemptible programs, comedies,
series, and shows that deflect people’s hearing and eyesight towards it. They
claim to be fasting - (yes), they are
fasting from food and drink but they are not abstaining from what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىَ)
has prohibited.
Drawing closer to Allah with lawful deeds
will not be complete except after abandoning unlawful ones. So, the Muslim must
safeguard his fast from these things; he must safeguard his hearing,
eyesight, and tongue from all that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىَ)
has prohibited. This is the one who is fasting in actuality.
As for the one who engages his tongue in
corrupt speech, and indulges his eyesight and hearing in haram – even if he
were to abandon his desires and food, Allah will not accept it from him.
Fasting isn’t to simply abstain from food
and drink only, but above all, it is to abandon all that Allah has made
unlawful. So it is upon the Muslim to protect his tongue , his hearing, his
seeing, his hand, his foot , and all of his limbs; and to abstain from all that
what Allah has made haram. This is the fasting person, who has fasted
outwardly and inwardly, and purified his intentions for Allah. He is the one
who will gain the reward of fasting. Translated by: Abu Idrees Muhammad
The one, however, who comes with the image
of fast…which has no real essence; his portion of fast is hunger and thirst. He
((صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said: “Whoever does not give up false
statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words
to others, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.”
