It is a must that you
hide any misfortune that befalls you. Be patient and show the opposite. Show
richness in times of poverty and wellness in time of illness so that your enemy
doesn’t
gloat at your misfortune with malignant pleasure. It has been said that when a
group of people visited Muʿ
āwiyah on his deathbed, he asked to be sat up in order to show good health. And
when the people would leave he’d lay back down.
