20 Affairs which help with patience over the harm of others - Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah

وَلَمَنْ صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمِنْ عَزْمِ الْأُمُورِ

“And whoever is patient and forgives – indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.” (42:43)

Pardoning and having patience with others is from the characteristics Allaah تعالى  loves.

20 AFFAIRS WHICH HELP WITH PATIENCE OVER THE HARM OF OTHERS

by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah
Translated by Abdulilah Lahmami (حفظه الله)

1 That he testifies that Allaah is the One that creates the actions of the servants.

2 That he testifies to his own sins and that Allaah has decreed they (those that oppress him) will oppress him due to his sins.

That he testifies the good reward that Allaah has promised for the one that pardons others and is patient.

That he testifies that if he pardons others & is better than them then he has been blessed due to having a pure heart towards his brothers.

That he knows that whenever he seeks revenge over anyone for himself  then that is due to having a lowly trait in himself.

6 He testifies that the reward incurred is based upon one’s actions.

That he knows that if his soul busies itself with seeking revenge & being recompensed, his time is wasted & his heart will not be tranquil.

That his revenge, its fulfillment and seeking victory is for himself only.

If he is harmed up in what he has done for the sake of Allaah, it is incumbent upon him to be patient & no one will seek revenge over him.

10 That he testifies that Allaah is with him if he is patient.

11 That he testifies that patience is equal to half of faith.

12 That he testifies that his patience is a ruling from himself over himself and a way of overpowering and overcoming it.

13 That he knows that if he is patient then Allaah will certainly give him victory.

14 His patience over the one that harmed him necessitates his oppressor returning from his oppression, feeling regret & excusing himself (for what he has done).

15 That he knows that his revenge  and committing wrong himself maybe a reason for his oppressor to increase in evil and bring more harm.

16 Whoever is used to taking revenge and is not patient then he will also fall into oppression.

17 That this oppression that he faced will be a reason for either his sins being expiated or his rank raised.

18 His pardoning and patience is from the greatest army he has over his oppressor.

19 That if he pardons his oppressor then his oppressor will realise that he is better than him and that he has succeeded him.

20 That if he pardons and overlooks, this will be a good deed that will lead to other good deeds.
