Ibraaheem ibn Adham (162H) said:
It reached me that Umar Ibn Abdil Azeez said to Khaalid Ibn
Safwaan:
“Advise and be concise! So he said:
“Oh Ameerul Mu’mineen! Verily people were deceived by the
cover Allah had placed over them, and they were put to trial by the (love of)
good praise (from the people), so do not let the ignorance of the people
concerning your reality overcome the knowledge you have concerning yourself!
May Allah protect you and I from being beguiled by Allah concealing us, (being)
pleased with the praise of the people, (being) opposers of that which Allah has
commanded us, (being) negligent, individuals inclined towards (following
desires)”. Whereupon he (Umar) wept and said: “May Allah protect us from
following desires!”
