On one occasion Imām
Ahmad went to the market of Baghdād, and he bought a bundle of wood and placed
it upon his shoulders (and started making his way out), when the people
realized who he was, the ones with businesses left their businesses, and the
shopkeepers left their shops, and passers-by stopped… all giving Salam to Imām
Ahmad, and they began to say, “We’ll carry the wood for you!”, and so he shook
his hand at them and his face reddened, and his eyes welled with tears, and he
said, “We are a miskeen people (referring to himself from great modesty and
humbleness), and was it not from the concealment of Allah we would’ve been
exposed”.
