Imaam as-S’adee [d.1376AH], may Allaah
have mercy on him, said:
“The essence and completeness of prayer
lies in reflection of the heart, and it lies in striving to reflect over the
meanings of what is being said when reciting, remembering Allah and
supplicating. The essence and completeness of prayer also lies in contemplating over the submissiveness to
Allah that actions such as bowing and prostrating reflect.
A person should bring to mind that he
or she is standing in front of Allah, confinding in Him and worshipping Him. This
is a time to actualize perfection (i.e. al-ihsaan): To worship Allah as if you
see Him, and if a person is not strong enough to do this, he or she should be
conscious that Allah sees them.
Likewise, a person struggles to keep his
or her heart away from thoughts and devilish whisperings, which only benefit him
or her with deficiency in the prayer. And Allah knows best.
