Chitchating is of
two types:
The chitchating
that neither has any benefit nor any harm, and the chitchatting that contains
harm. As for the first type, it is not befitting that a sane person spends his
time in that because it is tantamount to loss.
And as for the
second type, it is forbidden for him to spend his time in that because it is
evil and haraam. Therefore, whoever sits in an evil gathering, It becomes
obligated on him to forbid the evil. And if they [ i.e. the people] abandon the
evil, then this is what is sought after. However, if they do not return to what
is upright and persist upon their evil, then it is obligated on him to turn
away [from their gathering], instead [of saying] what some of the people
[erroneously understand] from the statement of the Messenger [sallal laahu
alayhi wasallam (that)]: “If you are unable [to stop evil with your hand, you
should do so with speech], but if not, then do so with your heart.”
So, he [i.e. this
person who sits in the gatherings of evil] then says: “I hate this evil in my
heart”, whilst he [continues] to sit it with its people. Therefore, it should
be said to him: “Had it been that you truly hate evil, you would not have sat
with them, because it is not possible that a person will sit [in such
gatherings] whilst he hates doing so unless he is one who is forced and harmed
[by others when he refuses, so he complies outwardly, whilst absolutely hating
such a deed in his heart]. As for hating something and then sitting in its
presence based on one’s choice [i.e. without being forced], then indeed your
claim that you hate it is not correct.
