The meaning of As-Salaamu-Alaikum

The scholar Shaykh Uthaymeen said: ‘As-Salaamu-Alaikum’ is a prayer for safety and security from all harms. When you say to someone ‘As-Salaamu Alaikum’ this means you are praying to Allah that He protects this person from all harms. You are asking Him to protect them from sickness, insanity and mental illness, and the evil of people. You are asking Allah  to protect them from committing sins, the sicknesses of the heart and you are asking Him to protect them from the Hell-fire. Thus this phrase is comprehensive. It is a supplication for the individual to whom you are speaking to receive safety and security from all harms.
