We find in the narration collected by Imām Muslim (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) on the authority of Abū Hurayrah (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ):
“While a man was strutting haughtily in his garments, amazed with himself, Allāh caused the earth to swallow him up, and he will continue to sink into the earth until the Day of Resurrection.”1
Another wording
mentions that the man was preoccupied
with combing his hair. Al-Qurṭubi (رَحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ) said: “This
self-indulgence is when a person looks
at himself with amazement, forgetting the blessing of Allāh.”2
