Shaykh Muhammad bin Sālih al-‘Uthaymeen mentions in his tafseer of the saying of
Allāh :
وَاعْفُ عَنَّا
“(O
our Lord) pardon us.”
meaning;
overlook and pardon our shortcomings regarding the obligations.
وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا
“and
forgive us”
meaning;
overlook and forgive the sins which we have committed.
وَارْحَمْنَا ۚ
“and
have mercy upon us.”
meaning;
bless us with Your mercy so that we do not fall into the prohibited affairs or
that we do not fall short in the commandments (obligations).
