Shaykh Abdul Muhsin al-Abbaad – may Allaah preserve him – mentions in his book ‘al-Fawaaid al-Muntaqaah min Fathil Baaree wa Kutubinn Ukhraa’ (Selected Benefits from Fathul-Baaree and Various Other Books) pg. 352; benefit no. 481:

Manners of Visiting the Sick Person

al-Haafidh (Ibn Hajar) said in al-Fath (Fathhul Baaree in Explanation of Saheeh al-Bukhaaree):

“The manners for visiting the sick person total ten things in number, and from those manners are those which are not exclusive to the visitation of the sick:

(1) That he does not face the door when seeking permission to enter.

(2) That he knocks the door lightly.

(3) That he does not make himself ambigious, such as if he were to say “Its me”.

(4) That he does not come at times inappropriate for visitation, such as (visiting) at the time when the sick person takes his medicine.

(5) That he makes his stay short.

(6) That he lowers his gaze.

(7) That he does not ask a lot of questions.

(8) That he shows gentleness and is sincere in his supplication.

(9) That he gives the sick person increased hope and advises him with patience – due to what is contained in that from plentiful reward.

(10) That he warns him against being impatient – due to what is contained in that from sin.”
