The Comparison between Zakaat ul-Fitr & Prostration of Forgetfulness in Prayer

Wakee’ ibn ul-Jarrah (197h) رحمه الله  said:

Zakaat ul-Fitr for the month of Ramadaan is like the two prostrations of forgetfulness for the prayer, it compensates for any deficiency in the fasting just as prostration of forgetfulness compensates for any deficiency in the prayer!”

“Seven Simple Points on Zakaat al-Fitr” Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (Explanation of Buloogh al-Maraam)

Seven Simple Points on Zakaat al-Fitr
Shaykh Saalih al-AFawzaan
Explanation of Buloogh al-Maraam, vol. 3/pg. 154

[1]: Zakaat al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim whether young, old, male, female…1

[2]: The wisdom behind  the obligation of Zakaat  al-Fitr is that it rectifies  the      deficiencies in a Muslim’s fast, and it feeds the needy  [ on the day of the ‘Eid].

[3]: The amount of Zakaat al-Fitr is not to be  less than  a prophetic saa’, which is four   amdaad: four, average handed, two–handed scoops. This  is equivalent  to approximately 3 kilograms (i.e. 6.6 pounds).2

[4]: Zakaat al-Fitr is to be given  with food  that the people  are accustomed to  eating in their particular locale.

[5]: It is not permissible  to give cash  for Zakaat al-Fitr. [It is given in food].

[6]: The proper time to give for Zakaat al-Fitr is from the setting  of the Sun  of the eve of Salaat al-‘Eid until  the emergence  of the Imaam  for Salaat al-‘Eid.

It is also permissible to give Zakaat al-Fitr a day or two before the aforementioned   time, however, it is not permissible  to delay it past Salaat al-‘Eid. If it is delayed  beyond Salaat al-‘Eid, it is still obligatory for it to be given, even outside its proper time – and a person does not get the  reward for Zakaat al-Fitr, rather, a person  only receives the reward  for ordinary charity.

[7]: Zakaat al-Fitr is specifically for the poor. It is not to be given other than them from the eight groups who are eligible for Zakaah, nor is it to be given to charitable causes.

"Paradise is not attained through laziness... - by Shaykh Saleh Fawzan (hafidhahullah)

What does your worship do for you? Advice from Shaykh Uthaymeen رحمه الله - Translated by Rasheed Barbee (hafidhahullaah)

What does your worship do for you?

Advice from Shaykh Uthaymeen

Shaykh Uthaymeen رحمه الله  said1: Allaah the Exalted said:

(٤٦قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَعِظُكُمْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ ۖ أَنْ تَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ مَثْنَىٰ وَفُرَادَىٰ ثُمَّ تَتَفَكَّرُوا ۚ

Say (to them O Muhammad): ’I exhort you on one (thing) only: that you stand for Allah’s sake in pairs and individually, and reflect2

This verse shows that when a person does an action for Allah he must reflect upon how he performed this action. Did he perform it in the required manner; was it deficient, did he add something? And did he achieve cleansing  of the heart and purification of the  soul from this action? He mustn’t be like the one  who performs  righteous actions as  though it is a daily habit; rather you must reflect upon what  have achieved by this worship, and what effect it has upon your heart and your uprightness.

We will strike with the prayer. Allah the Blessed and Exalted said:

(٤٥وَٱسۡتَعِينُواْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ‌ۚ

And seek help through patience and prayer3

Let us reflect when we pray does our prayer give us energy, strength and vigor towards righteous actions such that our prayer  is helping us? In reality this is rarely seen in a person. Look to see what your prayer  is doing for you, does it assist you upon the obedience of Allah? Does it assist you when a calamity befalls? It was  said about the Prophet

كان إذا حزبه أمر فزع إلى الصلاة

If something troubled him he would take refuge by praying.4

Likewise Allah the Exalted said:

(٤٥) وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ ۖ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ ۗ

Establish prayer. Indeed, prayer  prohibits immorality and wrongdoing5

Look at your prayer. After you have prayed do you  find in your soul a hatred for  immorality and wrongdoing or does the prayer not benefit  you in this manner? If you understand this then you know the result of righteous actions.

Another example is Zakat. Zakat is obligatory charity given from pure wealth which  the person spends in vary ways as Allah has commanded. Allah  clarified the benefits of  giving Zakat when He said to Prophet :

(١٠٣)خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا

Take charity from their wealth  in order to cleanse  them and purify them with it6

When you have paid Zakat look and observe. Did it cleanse you from  despicable  character and sins? Did it purify your wealth ? Many people give Zakat as though they are paying a fine! They give it  while hating to do so. They  don’t feel  that it is purifying them, or that it is cleansing their soul.

Not ready to die but Not ready to be righteous

Bilaal ibn Sa’d1 may Allah have mercy upon him said:

Slaves of the Most Merciful, it is said to one of us…

Would you like to die?

So he responds: ”No!”

It is said to him: ”Why not?”

He responds: ”No until I do some good deeds.”

It is said to him: ”Do good deeds”.

He responds: ”I will do good deeds later”.

Therefore he doesn’t want to die nor does he want to do good deeds. And the most beloved thing to him is for Allah’s action (taking his soul) to be  delayed, while he doesn’t love that Allah delays giving him good portion of the wordly life.

Al-Albānī: If Someone Forgot to Say “Bismillāh” for Wuḍū

SHAYKH MUAMMAD NĀIR AL-DĪN AL-ALBĀNĪ

Questioner: If someone forgot to say “bismillāh” at the start of his wuū [ablution], what is binding upon him?

Shaikh Al-Albānī: Nothing. [Allāh says:]

O our Lord, do not hold it against us if we [leave an obligation or do something prohibited because we] forgot, or [if] we do something the wrong way [because we were ignorant about the correct Islāmic way to do it].¹

Reading Qur'aan is better than Dhikr

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen –Rahimahullaah- said:

“Sometimes that which is second best is contradicted and it becomes better than that which is the best. For example: reading the Qur’aan is the best Dhikr, and the Qur’aan is the best Dhikr, so if a person was reading the Qur’aan and heard the Mu’adhdhin say the Adhan, is it better that he continues with his reading or respond to the Mu’adhdhin?

Here we say: Indeed it is better to respond to the Mu’adhdhin even though the Qur’aan is better than Dhikr, however Dhikr in its correct place is better than reading the Qur’aan because reading the Qur’aan is not limited to a particular time, whenever you want you can read the Qur’aan but responding to the Mu’adhdhin is connected to hearing the Mu’adhdhin.”

Seeking out Laylat-ul-Qadr and the way to spend this night - Permanent Committee

Q: How to spend Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Decree in worship;is it by offering Salat (Prayer), reciting the Qur’an reading the Sirah (the Prophet’s biography) listening to lectures and lessons, or celebrating it in the Masjid (Mosque)?

(Part no. 10; Page no. 414)

A: First: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to be exceptionally diligent  in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan, more so than at any other time; praying, reciting the Qur’an and supplicating. It was reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim on the authority of ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased upon her) that: ”When the last ten (nights of Ramadan) began, the Messenger  of Allah (peace be upon him) would stay up the night, wake his family (for prayer) and tighten his Izar (i.e. exert  himself in worship and abstain  from conjugal intercourse).” Ahmad and Muslim reported: ”The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to strive  hard in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan as never did at any other time.”

Second: The Prophet (peace be upon him) exhorted to stay up and pray Qiyam (optional Night Prayer) on laylat-ul-Qadr out of faith and in the hope of reward. It was narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: ”Anyone who spends laylat-ul-Qadr in Qiyam, out of Iman (Faith) and Ihtisab (confident anticipation of Allah’s Reward), will have their past sins forgiven.” [Related by the Group of Hadith Compilers except Ibn Majah] This Hadith indicates  that it is prescribed to stay up and spend in this night in Qiyam.

Third: One of the best Du’a’s (supplication) to be said on Laylat-ul-Qadr is that which the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught  to ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). It was reported by Al-Tirmidhy who ranked the Hadith as  Sahih (authentic), that ‘Aishah  (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ”I said,’O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is Laylat-ul-Qadr, what should I say on that night?” ’Say: 'Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhib-ul-‘afwa fa’ffu anny [O Allah! You are All-Forgiving and  You love  forgiveness, so forgive me.

(Part no.10; Page no. 415)

Fourth: With regard to specifying which night of Ramadan is Laylat-ul-Qadr, this requires specific evidence, however the odd  numbered nights during the last ten nights are more likely than others. The night of of the twenty-seventh is the most likely to be Laylat-ul-Qadr based upon the Hadiths reported in this regard.

Fifth: With regard to Bid’ahs (innovation in religion), they are not permissible during Ramadan  or at other time. It was authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stated: ”Anyone who performs an action which is not in accordance  with this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected.” According to another narration:” Anyone who introduces anything into this matter of ours (Islam) which is not of it will have it rejected.”

We know of no basis for the celebrations held during some nights of Ramadan. Truly, the best of guidance  is the guidance of Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the worst of matters are those which are newly-invented in the religion.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Obligation to pay Zakah is not restricted to Ramadan - Shaykh 'Abdul-Aziz 'Abdullah Al Al-Shaykh

From the Fatwas of Shaykh ‘Abdul-Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al Al-Shaykh

Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Obligation to pay Zakah is not restricted to Ramadan

Q: When does Zakah (obligatory charity) become obligatory? When should it be paid and who are its deserving recipients?

A: Zakah on wealth becomes obligatory if a Muslim possesses the Nisab (the minimum amount on which Zakah is due) and it is kept in possession for a Hawl (one lunar year calculated from the time a property reaches the minimum amount upon which Zakah is due), provided that the owner is a free person. The amount of Nisab for gold is twenty Mithqal (1 Mithqal = 4.25 grams) which is equal to approximately 92 gm. While the Nisab for silver is 200 Dirhams which is equal to 56 Saudi Riyals. If a person possesses the Nisab and kept it for a full lunar year, Zakah becomes due on it, which is one quarter of one tenth. For example, the Zakah of 100 Riyals is 2.5 Riyals and for 1000 Riyals it is 25 Riyals, and so on.

The due time for Zakah payment depends on the time when the person possesses the Nisab; if a person owns the Nisab in the month of Muharram, for example, Zakah is obligatory the following Muharram. It is worthy to mention here that the obligatory of paying Zakah is not confined to the month of Ramadan, but some Muslims prefer to pay their Zakah in Ramadan seeking  the doubled reward in this month. However, if Zakah becomes due at any other time than Ramadan, it is obligatory to pay  it and not delay it until Ramadan. If one hastens to pay Zakah in advance before the completion of a year in order to pay it in Ramadan, there is nothing wrong with this, In sha’a-Allah (if Allah wills).

As for the deserving recepients of Zakah, they are those specified in the Saying of Allah (Exalted be He): ”As-Sadaqaat (here it means  Zakaat) are only for the Fuqara (poor), and Al-Masaakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds), and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islaam), and to free the captives, and for those in debt, and for Allaah’s Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun – those fighting in a holy battle), and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allaah. And Allaah is All-Knower, All-Wise.”

Revelation of the Qur'an on Laylatul-Qadr: Fatwas of Permanent Committee

Q: Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says: {Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree}. ”The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed us that Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Decree) is sought during the last ten days of Ramadan, when he said: ”Look for it (Laylat-ul-Qadr) during  the last ten (nights).” Taking this  into account ,why  do some  people say that the Qur’an was revealed on the 17th night of Ramadan?

(Part no. 3; Page no. 61)

A: The Qur’an as a whole was sent down to Bayt Al-‘Izzah (the House of Glory) in the  lowest heaven during Laylat-ul-Qadr in Ramadan. Allah (Exalted be He) says: { The month  of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind} He (Exalted be He) also says: {Verily, We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree)}. Then the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a portions according  to the situations and conditions  throughout twenty-three years. It is related by Imam Ahmad, according to his Sanad (chain of narrators), on the authority  of Wathilal ibn Al-Asqa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger (peace be upon him) said: {Allah sent down the scriptures of Ibrahim on the first night of Ramadan, the Tawrah (Torah) on the sixth night, the Injil (Gospel) on the thirteenth night, and the Qur’an on the twenty-fourth night.} It is also related  by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger  of Allah (peace be upon him) said: ”Look for it (Laylat ul-Qadr) during the last ten (nights); on the night when nine, seven or five nights  remain out of the last ten nights (i.e. 21, 23, 25, respectively.)” In addition, it is related in the Sahih (authentic) Book of Hadiths by Muslim it was revealed on the 27th night of Ramadan. Some opinions hold that Laylat -ul Qadr is the 17th night of Ramadan, since it was the day when the early Muslims fought the Battle of Badr. It is related by Abu Dawud in his Sunan, on the authority of Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him),that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saids, {Look for it (Laylat –ul Qadr) on the 17th  night of Ramadan}. However, this  Hadith is debatable because of Sanads  contains  Hakim ibn Sayf. The soundest opinion is that  Laylat –ul Qadr is sought during the last ten nights of Ramadan and preferably the odd ones.

Period-delaying pills to fast the whole month of Ramadan

Q: I have taken contraceptives pills in Ramadan. Should I make up for the days during which I did not have my period through the contraceptive effect of the pills and so I observed Sawn (Fasting) and offered Salah (Prayer) on them with the people? Is there any sin on me for taking these pills?

A: It is permissible for a woman to take a medicine to delay her menstrual period, so that she can perform Hajj or ‘Umrah (lesser pilgrimage), or observe Sawn in Ramadan, provided that it will result in no harmful effect on her. You do not have to make up for these days in which menstrual bleeding was stopped by the effect of the pills and you observed Sawn with the people.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!
