The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Paradise is surrounded with difficulties and
hardships, and the Hell-Fire is surrounded with lusts and
desires.”

Muslim]

an-Nawawee رحمه الله said:
“This
is from the exquisite, eloquent and concise speech which he (the Prophet) ﷺ was
given, by way of which he gives a beautiful analogy and example. And
its meaning is: Paradise will not be reached except by going through
difficulties and hardships, and (those who enter) the Hell-Fire it will be due
to lusts and desires. As for the hardships, restraining one’s anger, pardoning
others, forbearance, giving in charity, doing good to the one who treats you
badly, having patience in staying away from lusts, desires and the likes of
that. As for the desires and lusts which the Hell-Fire is surrounded by, then
what is apparent is that they are the desires which are forbidden, such as
alcohol, fornication, looking at women who are non-mahram, backbiting, playing
of musical instruments and the likes of that.”
