Strive towards purifying your heart before your limbs...

 

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymīn رَحِمَهُ اللهُ said:

So strive, my brother, towards  purifying your heart  before your  limbs. How many are those who observe Salat, fast, give in charity, perform Hajj but their hearts are corrupt.

Supplication is a cause for repelling misfortune just like the shield is a cause for repelling weapons

 

Al Hafiz An Nawawi رحمه الله said:

“Supplication is a cause for repelling misfortune and the presence of mercy, just as how the shield is a cause for repelling the weapon and water is a cause for the emergence of plants from the ground. Therefore, just as how  the shield repels the arrow  such that they both struggle, such is the case  for supplication and misfortune. Not taking a shield isn’t from the conditions of acknowledging predestination. Allaah,  the Most High, said, “They should take precaution and carry weapons.” Allaah predestined the affair (of being victorious) and its cause.”

فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ ۗ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ And whoever is removed away from the Fire & admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion

 

The Prophet ﷺ said:

 

“Paradise is surrounded with difficulties and hardships, and the Hell-Fire is surrounded with lusts and desires.”

[Saheeh Muslim]

 

Haafidh an-Nawawee رحمه الله said:

 

“This is from the exquisite, eloquent and concise speech which he (the Prophet) ﷺ  was given,  by way of which  he gives a beautiful analogy and example. And its meaning is: Paradise will not be reached except by going through difficulties and hardships, and (those who enter) the Hell-Fire it will be due to lusts and desires. As for the hardships, restraining one’s anger, pardoning others, forbearance, giving in charity, doing good to the one who treats you badly, having patience in staying away from lusts, desires and the likes of that. As for the desires and lusts which the Hell-Fire is surrounded by, then what is apparent is that they are the desires which are forbidden, such as alcohol, fornication, looking at women who are non-mahram, backbiting, playing of musical instruments and the likes of that.”
