{Then
we caused to inherit the Book those We have chosen of Our servants; and among
them is he who wrongs himself, and among them is he who is moderate, and among them
is he who is foremost in good deeds by the permission of Allah. That
[inheritance] is the great bounty} [Fatir:32]
Shaykh
Muḥammad Al-Amīn Ash-Shinqīṭī (رحمه الله):
Regarding the
promise of Paradise in this verse, the people of knowledge differ over why he
who wrongs himself is mentioned before he who is moderate in deeds and he who
is foremost in good deeds.
Some of them
stated: The one wronged himself was given precedence in order of mention so
that he does not despair, and mention of the one who is foremost in good deeds
was deferred so that he isn’t conceited by his actions resulting in them being
of no avail to him.
Others have
stated; The one who wrongs himself was given precedence in mention because the
majority of the people of Paradise are those who have wronged themselves, since
those who do not fall into disobedience are fewer than those who do, as Allah
has mentioned (except for those who believe and do righteous deeds – and they are but few.”[Sad:22]
