Abū ʿUthmān Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān
al-Ṣābūnī raḥimahullah [d. 449H] said:
Ahl al-Sunnah distance themselves from Ahl al-Bidʿah and al-Ḍalālat. They abstain from the people of
desires and ignorance. They emulate the example of al-salaf al-Ṣaliḥ,
those among the imāms of this dīn and
the ulāmaʾ of
the muslimīn. They hold onto what they have held onto, from
sound religion and clear Truth.
They detest Ahl al-Bidaʿ, those who have innovated
into the religion what is
not from it. They do not love them, take them as companions
nor listen to what they say.
They do
not sit with them and argue with them in matters related to the religion. They
do not debate with them. Instead, they safeguard their ears from listening to their falsehood – falsehood – if it were to pass
through their ears and settle in their
hearts, it would cause
damage and elicit evil whispers and
thoughts.
In this
regard, Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed:
“And when you see those engage in a false discourse
concerning Our verses by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to
another topic.” Qurʾān:
6:68.
