Question: What are the useful books that Muslims should read to understand their religion?

Answer: You should  read the Noble Qur’an; the books of Sunnah such as: Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim and the four Sunan (Hadith compilations classified by jurisprudential themes: Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, At-Tirmidhiy and Al-Nasa’y); and books of ‘Aqidah (creed) such as ‘Kitab Al-Tawhid’ (Book of Monotheism), ‘Fath Al-Majid’ and ‘Zad Al-Mi’ad’ by Ibn Al-Qayyim, in addition to ‘Al-Aqidah Al-Wasitiyyah’, Sharh Al-Tahawiyyah’ and such books written by Sunni scholars.

May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

How to attain a good life?

Allah, The Almighty said: Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islaamic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter). (Surah An-Nahl, verse 97)

Upon you is knowledge. For indeed seeking it is worship.Learning it for Allaah’s sake is a good deed...

Upon you is knowledge. For indeed seeking it is worship. Learning it for Allaah’s sake is a good deed. Striving upon it is a means of drawing nearness [to Allaah] for its people. Teaching it to one who does not know it is charity. Researching it is Jihaad. And reviewing it is Tasbeeh.

“Just as companionship with good people leads to good, then companionship with evil people leads to evil. The intelligent one does not desecrate his honour and does not expose himself to the pathways of evil by taking to evil companionship.”

What is a pure heart? (قلب سليم)

What is a pure heart?

It is a heart which is free of Shirk (polytheism) and free of doubts. It is a heart which is free of malice, rancorous envy, stinginess, and arrogance. It is a heart which does not love evil, and a heart which is content with the Sunnah and free of bid’ah (innovations in the religion).

[Tafseer Ibn Katheer, Al-Jawāb al-Kāfī and  Tafseer As-S’adī]

The Importance of Purity of the Heart

Al-āfi Ibn Rajab [d. 795 AH] said:

So if his heart is pure, containing nought but the love of Allāh and love for that which is beloved to Allāh, [and he possesses] knowledgeable fear of Allāh and fear of falling into that which He detests, [he will find] himself engaging in righteous deeds only.
