Al-Hāfidh an-Nawawī (rahimahullāh) said1:
“Remembering Allāh (dhikr) can be done
by the heart and also by the tongue. The best of it is that which is done by
both the heart and the tongue together. If it was to be confined to one of
them, then the heart is the best. One should not abandon making the remembrance
upon the tongue accompanied by the heart, for the fear of it being taken as
show-off (riyā’).
Rather, he should make the remembrance by both of them (i.e. the heart and
tongue) thereby seeking the Face of the Exalted Allāh…”
