How to contemplate over the Qur’aan to attain benefit
Shaykh-ul—Islam ibnu Taymiyyah said:
“Whoever contemplates over the Qur’aan, seeking guidance from it will
clearly recognize the true path.”
Shaykh ibnu Uthaymeen comments: A powerful statement in
meaning. It contains two affairs (conditions); (1) contemplation and (2) seeking guidance. Therefore, “contemplation” is the action (required) and “seeking guidance” is the good (sincere, truthful) intention (required) and “will clearly recognize the true path” is the clause that expresses the result (of the two
conditions being met).

The illustrious scholar, Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih
al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله stated:
It was mentioned in an authentic hadeeth:
“This world is a prison for the believer and a Paradise
for the disbeliever.”
(Saheeh Muslim no. 2956)
So this world for the believer is a prison, because he
is waiting for that which comes after it of eternal bliss (i.e, Paradise), so
it is as if he is in a prison compared to what is awaiting him. As for the
disbeliever, then this world is his Paradise. That is because no matter what he
finds in this life of hardship and distress, compared to the punishment of the
grave and Hell-fire would be considered Paradise.

Ibn Taymiyyah on Afflictions From People, Patience and Reward
However, the soul of the one afflicted by a heavenly
affliction is able to show such patience that the soul of the one whom the
people have wronged is not able to show. For ( the first person) perceives that
Allaah is the one who did such a thing to him, hence, he renounces himself from
repulsion (of that thing), punishing (others for it) and taking revenge. (This
is) in opposition to the wronged person who has been wronged by the people. For his soul feels that it is
possible to repel, punish and seek revenge from his oppressor. But showing
patience upon this (type of affliction) is more excellent and greater, just
like the patience of Yusuf (salawaat and salaam be upon him). This is because a
person (so afflicted) knows that (even though the affliction came to him
through another person) it was Allaah who decreed that (upon him), hence he
shows patience upon that (affliction). It is also because he may seek to
acquire the reward of those who control their anger and overlook and pardon the
people, and Allaah loves those who do good… (Majmu’ al-Fataawaa 17/26).

...
… gratitude and gratefulness to Allaah for
His bounties are often neglected by the creation due to inattentiveness and
negligence. Combined: patience and gratitude are the amazing traits of a
believer that raise him, and give him honour in this life and immense reward in
the Hereafter. But how do we attain this high level?

Narrated An-Nu’mân bin Bashīr رضي الله عنه : I heard
Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم saying, “Both
legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (unclear)
things, and most of the people have no
knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these unclear things, he
saves his religion and his honour. And whoever indulges in these unclear things
is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Himâ (private pasture) of
someone else, and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware!
Every king has a Himâ and the Himâ of Allâh عز و جل on the earth is His illegal
forbidden things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes
good (reformed), the whole body becomes good, but if it gets spoilt, the whole
body gets spoilt and that is the heart.”

Al-‘Allaamah Rabee’ Bin Haadee Al-Madkhali – may Allaah
preserve him – said:
So everything
that Allaah has written for mankind from good and bad will definitely reach him
and there is no escape from it.
[No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourselves but
is inscribed in the Book of Decrees (Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz), before We bring it
into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah. In order that you may not be
sad over matters that you fail to get, nor rejoice because of that which has
been given to you. And Allaah likes not prideful boasters.] (1)
This is from the fruit of true belief in the decree
(Qadr) of Allaah, that you do not rejoice (in a haughty manner) with what you
have been given from blessings and good, and do not be arrogant and insolent.
And [also from the fruit of true belief in Qadr] is
that you are not sad due to what has passed you by from the worldly enjoyments.
This is because being sad does not benefit you. And you will not receive
anything from these worldly enjoyments except what Allaah has written for you.
So if this
belief is firmly established in the soul of the believer, the intensity of
these calamities (to the believer) become lessened, and (subsequently) he
avoids the evil of haughtiness, insolence and rejoicing [in an arrogant manner]
that might afflict one who doesn’t believe in the Qadr, and we seek Allaah’s
refuge [from that].
And the mention
of this Ayah:
[And if Allah touches you with hurt (calamity), there
is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is
none who can repel His Favour.] (2)
[This Ayah] means: that Allaah has decreed the good and
the bad. So if harm befalls you, then no one can lift it except Him [Allaah].
So if He wants good for you [from blessings], even if all the people on earth
come together they will not be able prevent that good from you. And the hadeeth
of Ibn Abbas is in accordance with this Ayah (And know, that if all the Nation
come together to benefit you with a thing, they will not be able to benefit you
except with what Allaah has written for you. And if they come together to harm
you with a thing, they will not be able to harm you except with what Allaah has
written for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried). (3)

Ponder!
Why were you created? Ponder! To where are you travelling?
The
one with intellect contemplates regarding his (current state), he contemplates
regarding that which is approaching him,
therefore he prepares for that which is in front of him.
The
wordly life is a passing life and the Hereafter is an everlasting abode. The
worldly life is the abode of action and the Hereafter is the abode of

Know
