Shaykh Abdullah Bukhari regarding the etiquettes of listening to the Khutbah from the explanation of Umdatul Ahkaam.

Some points taken from Shaykh Abdullah al Bukhari’s explanation of the following Hadeeth during his Explanation of ‘Umdatul Ahkaam:

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger as saying:

“If you ask your companion to be quiet on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, you have in fact talked irrelevance.”[Muslim 851]

The Shaykh mentioned that the word in the hadeeth (لَغَوْتَ), the origin of it being لَغَى يَلْغُو، لَغْوًا،  has many meanings according to the scholars of the Arabic language. From them:

Evil speech
That which has no good within it
Speech that isn’t befitting
Failure
A saying that diverts one from the truth

• The most correct , and the opinion of the majority of the people of knowledge, is that listening to the Khutbah is Waajib and speaking during it is Haraam. The evidences for this are many from the Qur’aan and Sunnah.

• It is permissible for the ones present to speak to the Khateeb if there is a need. From the evidences of this is the hadeeth of the Bedouin who entered the masjid whilst the Prophet was giving the sermon and he mentioned their wealth, crops etc being ruined due to drought and asked the Prophet to supplicate for rain. The scholars have said that the Prophet didn’t reprimand him for speaking which is a proof that it’s permissible due to a need.

• The Shaykh also mentioned that if we notice a person talking during the Khutbah then we indicate to him to be silent by putting our hands to our mouths or fingers to lips or other such gestures which indicate silence. From among the proofs for this is the hadeeth of Anas (radiyallahu anhu) narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah in his Saheeh where a man entered the masjid whilst the Prophet was on the pulpit on Friday and he asked when is al Saa’ah (Day of Judgment) so the people gestured to him to be silent. So the man repeated the question three times , and the people kept on gesturing to him to be silent. After the 3rd time the Prophet said “Woe be to you, what have you prepared for it?...”. Al Nawawi, Ibn al Mulaqqin and others have authenticated the hadeeth.

• It has been authentically narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu anhu) threw stones at such an individual to gain his attention, then gestured to him to be silent by placing his hand on his mouth.

• The Shaykh mentioned that it is permissible to speak when the Khateeb has appeared up until he starts  the Khutbah, and it is permissible to speak once the Khateeb has finished the Khutbah until he begins the salah and this is the opinion of the majority of Ahlil ‘ilm.

• It is also permissible to speak between the two khutbahs, especially if there is need. But if there isn’t such a need then it is isn’t befitting for one to speak.

• Imaam ibn al Mundhir mentioned in al-Awsat that responding to the salaam is done by gesturing, and, responding to the one who said “ Alhamdulillah” after having sneezed, is done after the Khutbah has finished.

• The Shaykh mentioned that it is better to send salutations and blessings upon the Prophet once the Khutbah has finished as mentioned by Imaam ibn al Mundhir and that if one does during the Khutbah, it is permissible; the scholars mentioning that it should be done with a lowered voice so others don’t hear and are distracted by it.

And Allah knows best
